I've been rebuilding a 100 yr old trunk and the hinges are in good shape but badly tarnished, I've tried Brasso cleaner and scrubbing with a coarse sponge but no luck. I've seen on TV a product that supposedly cleans jewelry and things that are tarnished but not a clue what it is called? Any help would be greatly appreciated on ideas to help clean up the handles.
thank you

If the CLR doesn't work try a product called Navel Jelly it is a rust remover and it works fantastic on most things.

Is it possible to remove the hinges?
If so, that would be the best thing to do, because you can spray them with a gold paint or silver.

If not, try Vim or Spray nine.

you may want to reconsider whether to clean them at all - if they are functioning - doesn't it add to the character of the piece to have them tarnished? If not try soaking them in ZIP-STRIP because they may have a finish on them that brasso can't penetrate - be careful don't destroy them
