If you're going to form a negative opinion about someone, you may as well know a little something about them first. There's no need to be completely ignorant.
I live only minutes from an Amish community, so I'll try to help.
The Amish near me are Old Order Amish, which means they don't use cars, electricity, phones, ....all the modern conveniences. They do use gas powered generators for running refrigerstors (at least a few do!) and they accept rides to town with neighbors and friends. I see them in the stores quite often.
They still use the horse and buggy for transportation, and to plow their fields, harvest their crops, etc. Farming isn't what it once was, and some of the Amish in my area own businesses such as woodworking shops, general stores, etc.
Religion wise, they are a Christian sect, translating the Bible literally and living their lives as simply as possible. They have no formal churches, and each family in the community takes a turn at hosting services in their homes each Sunday. The services are in German, but outsiders are welcome at anytime to take part.
The kids go to school until the 8th grade. There's no need to go any longer, because they aren't going to be doctors or lawyers. Instead, they learn their trades from family and friends.
They tend to live together in close knit communities because it would be difficult for them to go about their ways if they were spread out all over the place. They are hard working, caring people who come together and help each other for whatever reason.
They are also beneficial to the communities around them. An example of their kindness and worth can be traced back to the May31, 1985 tornado outbreak our area experienced. The tri-state area was devastated with 143 tornadoes in an 8 hour period, with at least 3 of them being F-5's.
One of the largest on record hit a town about 20 minutes from me, and leveled it completely. Within days, a group of Amish from a neighboring state had arrived for the cleanup and rebuilding. They brought their own supplies, they furnished supplies for others, and they helped to construct new homes for people they had never met. They did this from their hearts and they asked nothing in return.
The attack at the school is a perfect example of what is wrong with this world. For the life of me I cannot understand how anyone could possibly want to harm the Amish. They have a wonderfully accepting view of outsiders, and a live and let live philosophy. The attack was a real tragedy, and my heart goes out to the community.

truly, many Amish communities do in fact have computers -- and phones, or maybe an section automobile for emergency use. The Amish community isn't as ludite as they're regularly looked as if it will be. The question the Amish ask about a technologies isn't, "is it technologies," yet, "does this technologies develop or divide the community?" A secondary question is, "How can we assure we may be able to own and performance this through paying in complete up the front because we would want to no longer enter any debt?" a computer managed milling device, as an social gathering, might want to be considered as some thing that builds up the community -- so long via the indisputable fact that's used for milling and not in any respect, oh, say, taking section in international of Warcraft. Many Amish communities have and performance a minimum of one server, on which they run software to promote their wares to a more suitable target market. those platforms are frequently powered through gas skill turbines, which let them to purchase the generator (up the front and in complete) and the gas (up the front and in complete) in preserving with their custom no longer to be in debt. extra, on the age of 16, maximum Amish little ones are grew to develop into out of the community and despatched to stay with kin who've left the Amish way of existence, to journey the exterior international, so as that no accusation might want to be made that the newborn has no longer made an recommended determination of residing the Amish existence into adulthood. opposite for your undesirable attempt at humor, any this kind of persons might want to truly answer your question and be justifiably Amish even even with the actuality that they are dealing with their outdoors journey. even with the indisputable fact that, Yahoo! solutions might want to be a divisive use of computer technologies, so I doubt you'll locate any of the actively-Amish persons right here.

I've stopped in Amish communities on my trekks across Ohio, and I have to say that they are a very decent, respectful people. Who cares if they choose not to have the internet or drive cars! Their way of life hurts no one and in fact is more helpful to others and the environment than any other group I know of. I have full respect for them and the fact that they were able to maintain their way of life while the world surrounding them is in constant change, and not always beneficial change.

The Amish are hard working, decent people. They are Pacifists (against fighting). They are also very industrious and generous.
I live in Ohio. We have Amish in Geagua County (northeastern part of Ohio) and in central Ohio (Berlin, Kidron, mostly Holmes county).
I don't know any personally.
A colleague of mine works as a librarian in Holmes County and serves the Amish. Many of the youngsters know how to use the Internet. They just don't have it home.
If you want to know more about the Amish, their faith and lifestyle, ask for some books at your local public library.

I wish all the world could be like the Amish. We don't have them around here, but we are getting a pretty good sized population of the Mennonites, a branch of the Amish, except they use the modern covienences, phones, cars and eletricity. They are all good people.

Nothing wrong with simple. In fact, if more people were simple, we wouldn't have kids on Ritalin, there would be less crime, there would be fewer incidents of heart attack and stroke, and so on.
Simple lives result in pleasant living. Simple faith encourages even more pleasant lives. Neighbors care for one another, they live in community with one another.
Not a bad idea at all.

they are getting it done there own way, I wouldn't be one, I like technology and evolution of culture and architecture and art, I could never be that peaceful or simple, but they have an inner peace that is hard to find this day and age and they keep their youth which is always an amazing thing

I believe they are a very family-oriented, quiet community, who do not bother others and who should be left alone to do as they wish. The tragedy recently in their community is extremely sad.

probably one of the most peaceful communities on earth. They have been terribly violated and the word tragedy does not do justice to what has happened to them.
