Okay, I am on the birth control pill Portia, which is the generic of Nordette. I'm taking this because that's all the pharmacy in my school offered, and I am fine with that. My question is, I thought birth control pills were supposed to DECREASE cramping? This evening, i've had some of the most terrible cramping ever, and it feels awful. Even when I wasn't on the pill, my cramps were never bad...they were merely a minor annoyance. But these are the worst. If some people use the pill to decrease menstrual cramps, then why do these hurt so bad? I never experienced any type of cramping with Nordette, and my periods were wonderfully light, and I assumed that since Portia is the generic equivalent, then it would be the same way. Does the pill increase abdominal cramping for some of you? Is that a side effect?

Guerilla: sorry for the confusion, but I am not in high school. I'm in college...Graduate school as a matter of fact. :-)

Thanks for the responses everyone! They have really subsided and I feel better now, and I think will talk to my doc about getting something different. Can't take this on a regular basis. Thank you! :)

I haven't taken BC pills for more than 30 years. Somehow it doesn't sound right though. You might try taking "evening primrose" suppliments. They decrease cramping if you start taking them the day your period starts or hopefully the day before. I've had cramps that seemed worse than childbirth. I hope it gets better for you.

It could just be the pills. I know that I had bad cramps on the pill too, they seemed better with a lo dose birth control. I also did the once every 3 month option which was great and my periods were lighter.

sounds like you are having a reaction to something in the Portia even tho it is the generic it is not the same i hate to say it but pay out the extra money and get back on your Nordette but talk to GYN about it first you need an examination with such bad cramping

When I was on birth control I had more pains in my stomach then when I wasn't on anything. I had horrible cramps just like you. yes I definently believe that it's a side effect for some of the pills.

I believe you should have a doctor change the pills as it sounds like you are having an adverse reaction. You should call the doctor's office in the morning and discuss it with a nurse to have them changed.

Please take care and be well.

Talk to your doctor!, and i wouldnt recommend changing to the nuva ring, i had severe heart and chest and arm pains, for a half an hour, and they kept coming back over and over, i must have had a stroke or something, but i dont smoke, drink, nothing, it still happened and side effects from birth control should not be taken lightly..

The pills should have a leaflet that tells you about the side effects. But you should definitely see a doctor asap.

The appendix is placed on the suitable facet of the physique. consisting of your indications (hubby had same ones), apparently you have an appendicitis. i might bypass to the ER right now, quite in case you have a fever. you are going to be considered earlier it ruptures, as which could have extreme issues! for sure, i'm not a doctor, notwithstanding it does sound suspicious for an appendicitis. i'm hoping all is going nicely!
