Here's a report from AFP.

Super Thin Is No Longer In

Anorexic and paper-thin models could be banished from the pages of Britain's numerous glossy women's magazines because of the image they portray.

Editors agreed at an extraordinary summit in London to draw up a voluntary code of conduct which would include “monitoring images” and "using models who varied in shape and size” .

The government-organized gathering was sparked by concern over the rising number of women with eating disorders, and evidence showing that media images of ultra-thin models are stripping women of self-confidence and self-esteem.

The code could impose a minimum size for models and ban adverts promoting unhealthily thin images of women.

A self-regulatory body would be made up of top magazine editors, fashion stylists, photographers and women to check the contents of fashion pages and keep tabs on the model industry.

"The fashion industry is a very rarefied world and I think has become a bit divorced from reality recently," said Liz Jones, editor of Marie Claire. "A code of self-regulation would mean, if an agency sent us a very thin model whose bones were showing through her skin, we would send her back and write to the agency as well as other magazines telling them not to use her. ”

"Size is a very subjective thing, but we could set down a minimum size for models we would use, and we could refuse to take adverts which show women in an offensive or unrealistic way," she added.

In Britain one million people are estimated to suffer from an eating disorder, the majority of them women. Last month, the British Medical Association warned that the portrayal of superwaif celebrities - the likes of Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart spring to mind - was contributing to the rise in anorexia and bulimia.

Jones said a conference of Marie Claire editors around the world last month had revealed rising rates of eating disorders in developing countries such as India, South Africa and Brazil. "The western media is having an effect on the poorest girls in the world," she added. "We are exporting the fact that women should feel bad about themselves."

Perhaps, but they never will. The public still want their models rail thin, whatever political correctness is spouted, and the designers want girls who are like sticks, because they want their clothes on hangers, not real people. Also not al models go to the extremes, and perhaps people should take some responsibilty for their own lives, not depend on others to judge whats best for their personal well being.

Yes, I do.

I think a more healthy, realistic standard is what they should aim for (and design clothes for!).

Far too many of the models that I have seen lately simply look ILL.

The fashion industry is brainwashing women and girls to think that they must be anorectic to be desirable.

Why not feature, and design, clothing to fit, healthy women, in a reasonable BMI?

REAL women come in ALL shapes and sizes. Aren't we the ones who buy the clothes?

Do REAL men find these emaciated models attractive, really? Serious question.

I, for one am NOT a slave to fashion. I pick out styles that I think flatter ME, regardless of if they are IN or not.

There are plenty of girls who are naturally thin. They exert the same energy as they take in. Whilst the BMI is a good guide it is not the be all and end all of weight measurement. Really the clothes seen on the catwalk are unsuitable for anyone to wear anyway - it is a fantasy. If you are not comfortable with your own body that is your problem not theirs or the medias.

Hi,
I guess agency wouldn't do that. since too thin not always cause by eating disorder or others that dangerous health. maybe it's just cause by their body metabolisme is more fast than others. so, however they eat much their body will not too big. or maybe also they have other desease like for example tyroid hormone problem. This make someone can't be fat even though they eat like crazy. so guess it's no reason not to accept too thin model.

Cheers !!

QuickBookAgency - that sounds the dodgiest, maximum cheapskate enterprise i've got ever heard of! And what they are doing is in simple terms what you will desire to do your self - drawing near companies. it rather is a entire scam. As for which companies are actual - nicely - are you a sort or an actor? they have not got something to do with one yet another, and function diverse companies. To be a sort you will desire to be very tall, rather skinny, with solid epidermis and an thrilling face. then you definately'll would desire to physique of recommendations actual companies with your portfolio. they'd not in simple terms ask for 'pictures'. To be an actor you will possibly want a great style of skills, years of coaching at a great performing college and extra years of adventure. then you definately'll mail them your resume with a consultant headshot. yet you're good approximately not requesting cost - no actual performing agent might ask for any cost in besides. Ask for innovations at your degree college, or drama college.

Yes, and I also think that most really skinny people (at least the ones past the age of 25) look good in clothing, but the people that have more muscle and are bigger (not fat, but just more muscular and toned and healthy looking) look much better naked.

yes they should... in addition they should refer the model "wanna be" to someone that can help them to learn how not to be dangerously too thin.

That's not a bad idea. Perhaps check with body fat ratio and if it is at an unhealthy level then they should be aware.

Dead people don't make good models.

Good question!
