Today at school my teacher was reviewing a story we were working on and said something related to death. For some reason my heart started to beat fast, I got hot, and thought I was about to die and kept repeating that in my head. So I excused myself to the bathroom and calmed myself down. My questions are: Why do Panic Attacks happen? and How can I make them stop?

I had panic attacks alot as a kid, so bad that my mom had to start volunteering at my school because I'd wig out when she was gone. I'm not sure why they happen, but I found that it helps to find something stable to focus on. when you feel a panic attack starting, try focusing on your dog, your bedroom, whatever works for you. pay attention to details of that object in your head. The familiarity of those things always helped me calm down enough to take a deep breath, and move on. I hope this helps you too!

OK, as someone who is fresh off medication for anxiety and panic disorders, let me take a crack at this: A fair few of the symptoms could be either, but all of them could be panic attacks. However, here are a few things which could help you determine which: Do these start after you've been thinking about your health, and wondering if you are OK. Panic attacks normally start with a thought, and build up based on it. Are you mentally confused at all during them? When I had panic attacks, I was never able to sit still. I would try to calm down and breath normally, but the slightest thing would set me off and I'd have to move. Does the shaking happen usually after things start to calm down. Your body produces a huge amount of adrenaline during a panic attack, and coming down off that causes shaking for people who have had panic attacks. If you really try had, and breath slowly and normally, and try to clear your mind, does this help it go away? Does the headache come after as well? I often got them from the physical exertion, which is usually quite extreme during a panic attack. I hope this helps...

Panic attacks can be triggered by any number of reasons. But it mostly goes back to prehistoric times where you had "fight or flight" situations. The feelings you have are a throwback to those times, believe it or not.

The "fight or flight" feelings can be triggered by a word, thoughts, smells, illnesses such as reflux disease.

You are certainly not going crazy. Thousands of people experience panic and anxiety attacks. Some attacks are mild, while others will scare the bejeebers out of you. You cannot die from a panic attack.

Practice deep breathing exercises and see your doctor if these continue on a regular basis. There are many medications that will relieve you of the attacks, though there is no cure.

Good luck!!!

Has there ever been any event in your life involving death that has been very traumatizing to you? If you do have a past issue there could be a lot of anxiety surrounding that event and when a releasing stimulus is presented (teacher speaking of death) all the emotion built up surrounding that issue is released as anxiety. The main way a psychologist would help a patient get over their panic attacks is most likely gradual exposure to the issue which brings about the anxiety and make you face it head on. There is also the possibility of medication to help get over your attacks.

well a clinical reason for a panic attack is breathing to rapidly and having a build up of carbon dioxide in the blood. Therefore having a lack of oxygen to the brain and causing dizziness. To stop panic attacks you need to find out why they are being triggered and attack that problem. Alot of times its depression.

I have suffered with panic attacks for years. They usually happen to me for no apparent reason. The thing you need to do is to keep reminding yourself that you aren't going to die and that the feeling will pass. The trick I used to use to calm myself was to bathe my face with cold water. If you aren't on medication but feel you need it, talk to your doctor. The medication that worked best for me after trying many was Paxil.
