There are many causes of headache from food allergies, hypertension, or aneurysms. If OTC drugs are not effective, you should begin to look for causes...what you eat.....what you drink...sleep habits...even posture. If nothing alleviates the pain, then you need a check-up by a physician. One of my patients developed severe headaches after buying a new pair of shoes..it changed his posture. Also remember the over-dosages of OTC pain relievers will cause headaches too. Try to determine your own problem but limit it to a week or less...then you should seek professional help. Sometimes headaches can be brought on by stressful situations...this happened to me, a certain patient would drive me crazy....and when he was scheduled in, I had the worst possible headache...it miraculously disappeared when he left the office.

I find that an old at-home remedy works best for me. When I get a bad headache (on the verge of a migraine) no meds seems to work so I go to my bedroom where I can keep it darker and quieter and fill a footbath with steaming hot water then soak my feet and relax. Make the water as hot as you can stand it. I read this in a magazine once and I'm not sure why, but it works.
