I am an upper middle class bride to be, and I am wondering the range of prices and maybe even a suggestion of where to get a gown. I am just engaged, so I haven't done any research. I am just trying to get a starting point.

Congratulations!
The cost of the gown varies and really depends on the type of fabric it's made of and if it is a designer name dress. I spent $1000 on my own dress which was made of organza fabric and it had hand embroidery along with a chapel length train. Don't forget to include a few hundred extra for any alterations that you may need as well. When planning my own wedding and I found that this website useful.

I got mind at David's bridal and it cost $1200. Depending what style you are looking for and if you cared if it a designer gown or not. I personally can careless if it's a designer dress or not. Not like anyone will be able to tell. Everyone has it's own style some likes it more fancy and detail than others. Keep in mind that alteration will be part of the dress. It's at least $150-$300 on alteration. Jewelry and accessories will add up. As you plan the wedding you will see every little detail will add up to your bills. I know that it's once in a life time but you don't wanna be paying for your wedding fo the next 9 yrs. Congrats!

anywhere from 200 to 5000 plus. it all depends on the length of train, material, and how many details (beading/sequins/etc.) I got mine for 429 at David's Bridal and found a NWT David's veil at the local Goodwill Store. Paid 10 bucks for it there and the David's tag was marked 99. Becareful of David's, though...you can tell they are there to make comission...My salesperson was great...no horror stories here, except that I didn't know they were coming out with their new line in a couple of weeks, and found another dress there that I liked better. (It's all good...fiance and i called it off, I've still got the dress, and I've already lost like 5 sizes...By the time I do get married, I'll be able to exchange it.) No returns or exchanges, unless your dress is beyond being altered and you need a new size. And if your dress is discontinued, you can get a different one. If it's cheaper than the first, you could lose your money, but if it's more expensive, can just pay the difference.

depends where you buy it. I've seen GORGEOUS gowns by david's bridal for less than $300 and GORGEOUS gowns by more expensive brands for more than $3000. Of course the quality differs, but then again you're only going to wear it once, and even if you save it for your kids or family.... it's not going to be an everyday thing. I say, if you have the money, get your DREAM dress.... it may be $100 or $10,000.....the knot.com has a gown searcher where you choose everything you want in a dress and it pulls up matches...you should check it out.

My sister's wedding gown was $700 and my cousin's (which was the prettiest dress I think I have ever seen) was $1,050. I know when my sister was looking she liked the smaller boutiques better, depending on where you live, but she liked the atmosphere better and felt like her dress was more unique that way. Most of the dresses she looked at were between $500 and $1000 despite the fact our dad saying there was nothing wrong with the $99 ones... guess that's a dad though. Congrats though!

Congratulations! There is a wholesale bridal store in Burlington, North Carolina called Bridal Mart. They have a website. You can get any gown you want for a fraction of the price. Check them out. For instance, I wanted a gown by Moonlight. It was $1,200. Bridal Mart ordered the exact dress for me for $475.00. Check them out. Happy Wedding Planning....

$800 right off the rack...no alterations needed. It was perfect! Strapless, mermaid style loaded full of pearls and sequins. That was a little over 4 years ago in a small town boutique. I believe they're a little more personable.
Most boutiques can get anything in Brides magazine. Check it out. It depends on what style you want, for prices.. Good Luck and Congats!

Our wedding budget is $8K, and we purchased my dress for $150 from a consignment shop. It shouldn't matter what class you are, you need a budget. This is for ONE day. I refused to spend thousands of dollars for a dress that I will wear for 6 hours.

Instead, I spent $150 on a $3000 dress and another $150 on alternations. It looks amazing now.

I actually found my dress browsing on ebay for an idea (yes...I was that bored). It was brand new, with tags, and only $75. I went ahead and bought it and it's gorgeous! Other places are David's Bridal (who happens to be having a sale right now), theknot.com, and of course, any small boutiques you may have in your city. Best wishes!!
