My sister has bipolar. She just turned 18 and currently has no job. She only has one month of prescription medication left. She just moved across the country to stay with me because her mother can no longer take care of her. I am trying to find some kind of insurance or program that will allow her to see another psychiatrist and get medication for her condition before she runs out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Most states have medical assistance. The federal government has a program called CAMA and a mental illness falls under the "approved" illnesses for this type of coverage. If you can at all, please pay for her medication until she gets help. Get her medical records from her other doctor, too.

Has you sister considered applying for SSI? She would be eligible and could still get CAMA. If she gets on social security disability she can eventually get Medicare as a disabled person to cover her medical care.

You must be a wonderful person to help your sister like this.

Since she has no income I'm sure she will qualify for the state medical program, in NY it is called Medicaid. She may also qualify for social security disability. She should go to the county mental health office as soon as possible. They can help her with getting medications until she gets the state medical insurance.

If all else fails, take her to the local emergency room. They will be able to give her a few days of medication and refer her to the agencies that can help her.

There are usually mental health facilities that offer treatment to people with no insurance at a cheaper rate. Try calling your health department or local mental health association

sometimes there are free or low cost clinics run by the county you live in...... for example here in Seminole County , Florida...there is a community mental health service for people with no insurance....

they have therapists and psychiatrists and even case managers....

maybe you can find something like this for your sister where you live...just search your phonebook and call around....

The state should have a program. Just call any health line...they should be able to get you to the right connection. Good Luck!!
