I just bought a house and all the walls and ceilings are textured. I liked it at first, but now it's annoying and I want to get rid of it. What would be cheapest, easiest, and less time consuming... chipping off the plaster, priming and painting it smooth, or just ripping it all down and re-drywalling? I know that chipping it would be cheaper, but what kind of problems would I be running into if I did that?

A daunting task no matter. I completely agree,,,SMOOTH is better.

To scrape, means replacing anyway, and as labor intensive as that is, I'd probably just re-drywall. Either will be messy.

Have you considered, on the walls at least, paneling? OR, installing drywall over the existing? 1/2 inch drywall is workable, though should be more than a 1 person job, and you'd have to remove molding, then re-install, but you'd only lose an inch all around. You would also have to relocate receptacles. Then just live with the ceilings as they are.

three ways I can think of:
1) plaster over it to make smooth and then paint.
2) chipping may rip the paper on the drywall, but thats easy to repair with some spackling.
4) Get an electric sander and sand it smooth, then paint.

You can buy some stuff from Lowes or any other hardware store that goes on like paint and makes it a TON easier to take off the textured mud.

Use this, and hopefully it will be smooth enough and be totally hidden when you go over and paint with a roller.

A third option, if the texture isn't too deep, is to get a professional to plaster over the top of the texture, thus rendering it smooth. This is also probably the cheapest and quickest option, and casues less mess.

you need to get a drywall company or call while you were out because if you do it yourself it is going to be a mess and you will need to skimcoat the walls when your done. ripping it all off? I don't think I would unless it is a small amount of drywall.

Put a smooth coat of plaster over it, then paint it.

I'd say plaster over it-- There are tools to remove "popcorn" ceilings.
