Just between the sauce on the bottom or candy on the top?

I think you pretty much answered your own question. Creme Carmel is usually a sauce that goes on top of deserts. Flan, I believe, is more of a solid candy.

Flan is a custard base dish in which caramel goes on top. Its much like the creme brulee.

Basically that is it. Caramel, with an "a" in the middle; is a sauce made of brown sugar or sugar and butter and made golden. It can be flamed on the top of a custard, or made as a sauce for the custard, as in flan.

Hmmm...
As for as I know, the Flan is egg custer with caramel sauce at the bottom.
creme carmel is something I've never heard about, hope some one will know.

I'm not sure. but "Carmel" is a town in Ca. that Clint Eastwood use to be mayor of.
Caramel is a sweet candy.

flan is a thick custard mexican treat and creme brulee is a thick custard french treat!!!

Both are very delicious and i suggest both!!!
