Herpes is a virus which can infect any part of the body. There are different types of herpes; lab tests can determine the type.

More likely, you've got an outer ear infection, which is usually a bacterial infection and can be quite painful. Left untreated it can lead to cellulitis; necrotic (dying) tissue. Obviously, an outer ear infection can travel to the inner ear, nose, mouth and even the brain and the skull.

It can be associated with Ramsay-Hunt syndrome, though in the absence of other symptoms, this is unlikely.

Below are two links. The first is for outer ear infection. The second is for Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome. You can read them tonight, but I suggest calling your doctor first thing tomorrow. However, if you have a fever, chills, vertigo (dizziness) and nausea, please consider going to the emergency room immediately (or "Nurses on Call" if your insurance plan offers it).

Yes, there isn't any. Herpes is caused by a virus. Actually, there is little cure for viruses nowadays. The only thing that you can generally do in the case of a viral infection is strengthen the immune system and hope it fights it off. Not with Herpes, the immune system can't win against it. Thus you only get to treat the symptoms. Once you're infected, it stays with you for life. So don't get infected.

Personal experience. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years.
