Because it shows they are capable of positive interaction with people and other people find them somehow interesting. Let's face it. We are social creatures. You cannot interact with a bump on a log.

it says alot about their persona, makes some woman say to themselves, "Hey this guys seems pretty cool, at least hes cool enough to have friends." but thats just my point of view.
