First, there are many types of finches. Each varies in the number of days the eggs hatch. Yet, because most finches are small, they lay the same range fo eggs. Most lay around 1-6 eggs. The eggs are usually about the size of your pinky finger nail when it is cut. Different types of finches lay different colored eggs, but often the same number.
Second, breeding your birds can be an enjoyful process. But, there are many things you may need to consider. What will you do with the babies? Where will you put them? You can definetly breed your finches, just don't over do it and be loaded with unhealthy inbreeds.
Third, make sure the couple is a true pair. If they show affection for each other such as grooming then that is a sign. The will often follow each other around and sleep side by side. If it is a true pair there is a good chance you will have hatchlings.
Last, some problems may accure during breeding. The finches could lay eggs, and then restuff their nest and start over. Fiches are known for doing this. They will start over about three times. Eventually, the eggs beneath will rot and affect the babies at the top. This nest stacking is called "An egg sandwich". Also, egg binding may occure. If this happens try to find a new mate for the other bird. Otherwise it will suffer from anxiety from losing its mate. Egg binding is where the female goes to lay the egg, but it is either too big or she is not healthy enough to lay it. It will then become stuck in her abdomen and crack. The yolk will then damage her internal organs. All though there can be problems, i suggest trying to breed finches at least once. It is a very enjoyfull experience.

Usually, captive Zebra Finches lay 3 - 5 eggs. Clutches of 6 and 7 eggs have been raised successfully, but is often too many.

They usually start sitting on the eggs from the day the third egg is laid.

Most finches have any where from 3-5 eggs.... if you have more than that, you might have 2 females laying eggs in the same nest.
