Wow, great idea. Take a bunch of anti-social screw-ups, who can't do anything right, never take orders, and don't follow anybody's rules and put them out in a war zone where success depends on a reliable chain of command and on strict discipline. Yeah, that'll work.
Hmph, and you think we have problems now with soldiers doing things like torturing prisoners...yeah, let the cons at 'em, what a good idea! Not!

I think that this is a very interesting question, and Im not sure how anybody else feels on this, but I for one believe yes they should, but there would be many technical aspects of this. If we sent prisoners off to war they would be more likely to run away and escape instead of fighting in the war. Which would defeat the purpose of sending them to war, and secondly the idea of prisons is to let the inmate spend time to think about what they did wrong and not to kill or create crime. In war you are taught to kill the enemy and to win. Although those are just a few technical parts of why it wouldnt necessarily work out, I would much rather have a man or woman go and fight the war after they made a mistake, than to see my father, brother, sister, or best friend go to war when they didnt choose to (like if a draft was reinstated.) But thats just my opinion.

I'm not sure if that would be a good answer to the problem of over crowding or not. I think that you might get prisoners escaping and reeking havoc where they aren't suppose to. Soldiers do follow rules of conduct and obligation. Ex.)if I ordered a group of soldiers to pull back because of a treaty that took place---and the criminals instead pillaged and raped---that wouldn't be a good thing.

No. Prisoners should be kept in small cells for the FULL term of their sentence, no exercise, no t.v., no computers, no cell phones. Just a 7x7 room with a toilet and a slot in the door for food and water. Professional soldiers should go to war and be ALLOWED to do what they are trained to do, KILL the enemy until the enemy says they've had enough.

you seem to be comparing a soldier's job with that of a prisoner's punishment. Serving in the military is about honour and duty, and defending one's home and way of life. It is NOT a punishment.

Yes and no. Some prisoners are very violent and could end up killing even more innocent people than are being killed now. Now if you are talking about pedophiles, I say ship all of them out. Them and some of the rapists.

No. I agree with Chainsaw's answer. Also, a lot of prisoners
are addicted to heavy drugs and would use that freedom to find them. Could they be trusted with the regular soldiers? I don't think so.

Oh yes! Let's give all of our prisoners GUNS and have them go fight for the same peoples' FREEDOM that put them in JAIL. For some reason, I just don't think it would work out. ;-)

many prisoners are mentaly disabled or simply not that bright, which is a necessity for being in the army. so, i don't think it's a great idea. nice try tho!

that is such a great idea! and if they die, oh freakin well! they aren't afraid or bothered by shooting whoever they please. wait a minute..for that reason they should not go. they would kill and raip all the civillians and then there would be a world war against america for revenge! holy crap! no never mind, thats a terrible idea, let them rot in prison!!!
