My dog, when she was about three, was in perfect shape. Now that she's ten, she's fat. We haven't changed her feeding habits or anything. So why is that?

Metabolism, you should switch to a weight control or senior formula. As dogs age, they slow down and are not as active as they used to be, and she isn't burning as many calories as she used to either.

Because they slow down with age, same as humans. Give your dog more exercise and change her feeding habits. Ask your vet how much you should feed and when. Then be sure you measure out the food.

I have a dachshund. He gets 1/2 cup of dry dog food twice a day. That's all. Then he gets walked at least once a day. He's 12 yrs old and isn't overweight any longer.

You can expect your dog to relax a little as it gets older. But only by two or three kilos! Allowing an animal to become obese in your care is cruelty to animals. Obese dogs suffer heart problems, feet problems, develop arthritis, and die sooner than fit dogs do. It is cruel and it should be illegal to let your dog get fat. Feed her moderately on dry biscuits and raw marrowbones and exercise her. She will live longer and happier.

Just like a lot of older people, they exercise less, and require less calories than they did when they were younger. Maybe you should change the feeding habits and take her for a run more often.

Just like a human, their metabolism begins to slow down. More frequent walking and a reduction in the amount of food they eat will bring your dog back to a healthy weight.

Dogs are just like people, honey, and when they get older, their metabolism is slower. Take her to your vet and she will give you the ideal food and exercise for your type of dog to keep her healthy.
