I'll be honest, am a true christian by heart and I don't even believe that speaking in tongues they way some Christians do it today is even real. The reason I say that is because of the following passage:

1Corinthians 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

I believe tongues refering to different languages and not the jiberish that these so call pasters are claiming to speak.

For if God could understand me in English, then what needs would I have for the Jeberish tongues many claim they use to speak to God with!!!!

Pentecostals believe they can. i believe in the bible it meant spoken languages that people can understand despite the speaker not having any experience of the language. most Pentecostals i see that speak in tongues don't speak a language they are not familiar with but make mindless noises and rants until they either snap out of it or pass out/faint. i am not aware of other denominations that do this. in the pentecostal church it doesn't seem to be the holy spirit because it serves no purpose as there is no one to interpret the tongue spoken or there is no one to understand it and therefore is not beneficial like when the apostles received the holy spirit and spoke to many and all could understand.

It's most commonly associated with the various Pentecostal denominations. However, the charismatic movement has found its way into other types of churches, as well. There are even Roman Catholics who speak in tongues (I'm Catholic, and yes, there's a Catholic charismatic movement), although this would hardly be representative of mainstream Catholicism. The practice of speaking in tongues is known as "glossolalia".

Personally I believe that the tongues mentioned in the Bible are actual languages here on earth. Say if you suddenly could speak Spanish but never studied it. I must say though that I have never heard actual tongues spoken in the other manner either while I was Baptist or now as a Catholic.I am NOT saying it isn't possible just that I haven't seen or heard it.

just the particular ones that think its cool. Anywhere else, and you'd be taken to the psych ward. It would be totally different if they tongues they were talking in were actual languages, not just babble

No, and people who say it is fake or pentecostal denominations are misinformed. You need to stop watching TBN.

If in tongues you mean spoken language, Yes.

Counting English, I almost speak one language or tongue.

If in tongues you mean instant knowledge of a new or different language, No.

It is one of the gifts of the Spirit of God (ie Holy Spirit). Pentecostal tends to be more open to it.

It is most important to understand the speaking in tongues is only helpful to the Church if there is one to interpret or if it is to one of that language.

1Cr 12:28And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

1Cr 12:29[Are] all apostles? [are] all prophets? [are] all teachers? [are] all workers of miracles?

1Cr 12:30Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

1Cr 12:31But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
