understanding Christianity and religion is important not just to assist in understanding history , but to allow you to have an educated view on whether you believe or not. just like understanding science and evolutionary proof is essential for you to be educated in and understand before you decide if it is correct or not.
You cant be against something that you havent educated yourself in.

Yes a basic understanding of Christianity, specifically the Roman Catholic Church is helpful in understanding the history of Europe, especially from about 1000 CE on.
The Roman Catholic church's power grew after the fall of the Roman Empire in the 400s. The Church assumed many of the duties and functions of government, like collecting taxes, raising armies and so on, and was eventually the government. The Church also granted its protection and blessings to rulers, kings etc. Education, was also based on Christianity with many universities basing their curriculum on theology.
Many wars were started and fought because of religion, for example The 100 Years War (which was longer than 100 years) began when two Catholic Bishops were thrown out of a window by Czech Protestants. The Spanish Inquisition, and the expulsion of the Moores from Spain was also religiously based. And don't forget the Crusades, the Protestant Reformation, the ex-communication of Henry 8th of England and the English Civil War were also based on religion--to name just a few.

Well, A little bit, you actuall would have to understand the, history of the Babalonian empire which was conquesred by the Medo Persian empire than came the Greek empire and The rebuilding of the Roman Empire to come. All these are mentioned in the bibile as well as the history books. Don't take my word for it though check it out for yourself. God is perfect

Yes to be familiar with Christianity is vital in order to understand European history. I descend from French Huguenots and am an American because of what the Catholic Church did to them. My ancestors had to flee for their lives. That is just one instance of needing to know about the history of the 'church'.

Deffinately it helps alot. for example columbus said that he was doing God's will by killing the Tiano indians. and that they were the superior race. but if you reasearch the Chrisrianity then you will find it teaches that all men created equal.
