A cage is a prison; would you like to go into a prison? African Greys are smart: he doesn't want to into a prison cell. He was created free: Born Free, like the movie.

I understand that a companion bird has to be in the cage for his own protection sometimes. But you have to make it unprisonlike. And it has to have enough room; it has to be substantially wider than his wingspan. I like the answer from Phoenix.

The only time my Ziggy is in a cage is for travel or when someone is visiting (he protects me from people!). He sleeps on his portable perch outside the cage, and he has the entire bedroom when I'm not there. There are no exposed electric cords or any other hazards; the tv and his cd player are placed in such a manner that he could not possible get to the electrical components. I have pictures of him on my pwp, link below.

I wouldn't prefer a cage to "outside" if I were a parrot unless there was something threatening me outside the cage. Don't worry, your bird is normal, he prefers lots of space and no bars in his views. He's a very smart bird!! They need a lot of companionship too and can live for 100 years, so that's quite a commitment.

You have to get him used to his cage even if he doesn't like it. My grey doesn't like to be in her cage other than for sleeping, but I make sure she spends alittle time in there even when I am home. If you can't be home with him or you are going to be home but busy, he should be in his cage for his own protection. Make sure it is filled with toys and fresh food and water and eventually he will enjoy being there (at least for small time periods). Good luck with him.

he'll get over it. my grey was the exact same way when he was young. i had to fight with him whenever it was time to go in the cage. but as he got older he started enjoying being in or on his cage. when he's ready to go 'night night' he goes and climbs in his cage and pulls the door closed behind him, and whenever i'm leaving or something and i need him to go in the cage, he goes right in without fighting me.

Have you given him a reason to go in? Are there toys in there? Comfortable perches? A nice snack?
Personally, I do not feed my birds inside their cage. Parrots in the wild do not eat in their nest. They go to roost in their nest, and they return there to sleep and be safe.
If you arrange his cage so that it is a fun place to go, he might be more interested in being in there.
This should be set up so that it is a fun place to be in. Lots of fun things to do, and a safe place to hang out. That is his "Room", his hangout. He needs to take an interest in it. If it's boring, he won't want to be in there.

Load it with some toys and chewy things. He'll want the food too and get a nice sleeping pouch. They like the security they offer.

1 perhaps he has not been in a cage before, so he is frightened.
2. perhaps the cage is too small he feels cramped or possiably even claustrophobic.

Can i stuff you in a cage? Would you like it? I'll only let you out to exercise. Can't be too entertaining in prison.
