As a preschool teacher I am in charge of finding activities to do on the school bus. My assistant rides the bus and all her children fall asleep. We are being evaluated this year by the Headstart board and the children are not allowed to fall asleep on the bus. Please help me!

I understand that falling asleep is hard for the little ones but the board sees that even the bus is a learning place. Thanks for all the great ideas.

Singing is a great idea. Also you can play i-spy type games.
Also a car scavenger hunt. The "list" can be pictures of things you are likely to see, a red car, another school bus, a dog, McDonald's, etc. Give each kid the list and a crayon to cross them off when they see them. This can also be made into a Bingo game by placing in squares. The first to get a row win a prize like a sticker. If you laminate the list (clear contact paper works) and use dry erase markers, you can play this over and over again.

You can play the colors of the rainbow game as well (or letters for those more advanced) where they have to find the colors (or letters) on signs/cars in the correct order.
I hope this helps a bit.

That's kind of messed up that the kids aren't allowed to fall asleep. I work in a daycare centre, and our preschoolers always fall asleep on the bus after a field trip. They're kids and they're little...they get tired out easily. Maybe you should tell the board that a bus full of noisy kids will be a hazard to the bus driver, and that they're better off if the kids are quiet and sleeping, for safety's sake.

Watch a few "Barney" tapes. You will then know all the songs they know. Play "sitting down" Simon Says. Granted, there is absolutely no way you can know who messed up and should be out, but that does not really matter to pre-schoolers. Young children lose interest in things quickly, so reading a story is only good for about five to ten minutes max. Interactive activities while sitting down are your best bet. The "Are You Sleeping Brother John" song where they have to put up their corresponding finger up then hide it, or Itsy Bitsy Spider. It requires singing and hand motions. "If your happy and you know it clap your hands" Another good one that can be done sitting down, and is only limited by the things you can think of to have them do. The Little Yellow Bus is another one.

LOL, I certainly do not envy you!!!

May be you could go on line and get some children theme songs.
Make up a game.
Play eye spy
Ask the children questions about how they like diffrent things.
Make up jokes
Tell storys
I made up this game a long time ago you may want to try it out.
Buy a pack of index cards. Write a number on the index card or you could use a color like make a box color the color you want it to be. After all the cards got either a number or color on it make another set for you exactly the same. Give out a card to each child then pull a card from your pile of cards and say the number or color out loud to the students. If their paying attention their going to say I got the match then you give them a treat for winning. This game is good for interaction and it helps the children pay attention plus if they know they are getting somthing for it. It also keeps them busy and quit waiting for their card to be pulled. Let me know how the game works out I've been wanting to know.

You could have little games or learning activities for the children to play with, with the child next to them for the bus ride. Or you could have them read little stories with one another (the two/three kids next to them). Hope this helps at all. I am a pilot, I have ideas for flying but not driving Ha ha. Have fun!

I don't see why they can't sleep. So kids can't ride and not go to sleep. They have had a long day and get still and off they go. I would try and get them to tell you what they see what color is the car they just past. Something like who can be the first to see a stop sign. Not sure but maybe that will help you keep them up and help them learn.

A good game would be to teach them a word and bring a ball. As you throw it to them have them say a letter for the word. Good Luck:)
