It isn't proper English, but neither are most of the colloquialisms we hear. In California, we hear it all the time - probably is a translation of muchas gracias.

Sure it's fine.
Not sure where it's often used, Wallace uses it in Wallace and Gromit, The Wrong Trousers.
My impression is that it wouldn't normally be a thank you in and of itself, but rather used to intensify a previous thank you, or thank the person again soon after for something else.

Yes, Germans say "vielen Dank" which means (approximately) something like "many thanks" (although "Dank" stays singular).
I am german, and I would not even have stumbled over that expression in english, because it might have reminded me of the german form.
But when I think seriouly about that, I must admit it might not be good english. But I don't know. English is only my second language.

Correction: I was shocked that a friend of mine had learn that in her English School today.
It is okay, we are all still working on our English skills, and learning is a continuation of our knowledge in our daily life.
"Many thanks," is a correct statement.
Good luck with your grammar, and the best is to you that may learn the language of English!

Hi, my first language is Spanish, so please excuse my writing.
I heard a man on TV who said ¨many thanks¨ and I was surprised to heard that, i used to think that expresion is not corrrect English. We have a very similar expression in my language: muchas gracias.
Greetings from Costa Rica.

"Many Thanks" is an expression used like "Thanks a lot". It is an acceptable expression. Many people simply translate it from their language and in most it is an acceptable expression. I have heard it in several places and used by several cultures. It is like saying "Many, many happy returns of the day".

It is technically correct but it sounds stiff and overly formal. A better expression to use would be "Thank you very much" or "Thanks a lot".
Hope this helps!
