I bought him a KONG and I give it to him before i leave, he chews on it and as soon as i close the door he cries and barks for a long period of time. He has water and food at his reach but he doesnt touch it until i get home. Whether he is in the crate or running around loose in the house he sticks by the exit and drools as he barks. He does however have a little buddy he plays with and adores, but that either helps the barking.

sounds like your dog has separation anxiety. talk to your vet about non-prescription solutions. different things work for different dogs. sometimes if you leave a shirt or something w/ your scent on it w/ the dog and that might keep him happy. if all else fails, don't leave the house. :)

I watched this program once and some experts told them to put the dog into a crate with their favorite toys, and do it in small increments. They feel more secure rapped in familiar surroundings, she is used to being with out you in the crate, so she calms down and takes a nap or something while you are away. I always thought crate training was strange, but when you think of it from a secure feeling place for a dog. Who could argue that.

Your dog is most upset in the 1st 10-15 minutes that you are gone. Give them something like a Kong w/ peanut butter inside or a nice chew treat that will distract them during this time. By the time they have finished the treat, you are long gone and they have forgotten that you left.

you can't really.and someone said to get him a friend good idea but....it can also be a bit messy cause they get into everything now that he's not barking for you but.....if you do get him a friend he might not stop barking.if you must make him stop get him a bark coller.everytime he barks he will get a samll shock not to hurt him but just enough to make him not wanna bark.they are a bit pricey but this is the way to go to stop him from barking.so just call your pet store and ask the price.

teach it negative reinforcement like if it barks spray the dog with water or give it a treat when it doesn't bark when you leave like affection or treats and the reason it barks might be because it is really attached to you or it doest have some one else to have fun with
