Tell yourself before you go to sleep that you will remember your dreams when you awaken. Additionally, put a pen and pad by your bedside so as soon as you awaken, you can write down what you remember.

I kept a notepad next to my bed to record my dreams as soon as I woke up. If you leave it until later some of the details are forgotten.

I had a head like a ten screen cinema for a while when I first started writing my dreams down, I had a dream every night.
I was told this was because my mind was emptying of all the clutter we store there, such as old worries and stressful events of the day.

This stopped after a while. I never had bad dreams, but I did have unusual ones.

Say to yourself as you are falling asleep I must remember to wake and write down in the notebook I keep at the bedside for that purpose any dream that I have this night.
Or so I was told many moons ago. However perhaps because I taught myself to do the exact opposite (to suppress any memory of my dreams) due to suffering from night terrors as a child, to this day it has never worked for me. On a couple of occasions though I have had and recalled very specific (prophetic)warning dreams that sprang instantly to mind when needed. Gee aint the mind a wonderful mystery ?

Whenever you wake up the dreams are most vivid, however if you go back to sleep most of the time you forget them. What is recommended is to keep a dream journal. Whenever you wake up in the middle of the night from a dream, immediately write it down in the journal, so that you dont forget it when you go back to sleep. This is what psychologists recommend.

One book I read suggested waking up often. Drink a large glass of water before bed so you have to get up to "go" and while you're in the restroom, write down what you can remember about your dream as briefly as possible (so you don't wake up too much and are able to go back to sleep to dream some more.)

I tried this for a while and it works, but I got tired of waking up so often.

You only remember it properly if you are still in the middle of it when you wake up. So if something accidentally wakes you up or your alarm clock goes off while you are having a dream, it will still seem vivid. Short of setting your alarm at regular intervals through the night I don't know how you can guarantee remembering your dreams..

When you sleep, your brain naturally fluctuates in modes of deep sleep and light sleep. Dreams occur during deep sleep. If awoken during a dream, you will remember it; however, if you awake after your dream has already occured and you are in light sleep, you are most likely not going to remember your dream.
These cylces occur about every 90 minutes.

you have to programme your mind to remember. you can do this by telling yourself that "i will remember my dream vividly / clearly in the morning". Keep a pen and paper (or dream diary - any notebook will do, used for this purpose only so that it doesnt get mixed up with other info) and if you write them down often enough, you'll begin to see patterns in your life and how you dream. cause apparently your subconscious mind communicates with others and your conscious mind, and in so doing, makes life a bit more predictable...?
