An angry cat can be quite intimidating. Your usually cool cat suddenly crouches, half opens his mouth, draws back his lips, and bares his teeth in a terrifying expression. And then he expels his breath in a loud hiss. It's enough to deter anyone – or anything.
But that's the whole point. And what could be more intimidating than sounding like one of the world's most fearsome animals – the snake. The sound your cat makes – as well as its grimace – resembles that of a snake right before it strikes. And the message is clear: This is a warning, and any further threatening behavior toward me is at your peril.

Because it scares the s hit out of animals that would prey upon them. They also use their hiss to warn others of their own breed that they have crossed into their territory and "be warned." Cats are prey for coyotes, mtn lions, large dogs, etc. and it is part of their defense. Their claws are another part and they use them when they sense that they are in the presence of people or animals that do not respect and trust them. Felines are amazing animals because each has a different personality, very distinct from the others, and they bond irrevocably with those who EARN their trust and love. The range of behaviors within the feline community is absolutely amazing which makes watching them go through their routines a lot of fun and humbling. You can test your own sense of humanity by making changes, relaxing, trusting those you obviously can trust, letting down your defense and other behaviors that keep felines from approaching you. Success with developing positive human emotions will gain you the trust of a feline. Success! Then people like you too. Except for a few exotic breeds, they only bond with one person. The most popular of those breeds are the Siamese. They control one human person at a time. So wait your turn, Bucky!
