Well i don't know if you live in New York but If something like (god forbid) 9/11 or the blackout happened again having a land line would be help full because that's the only phone that will work. And it's just always good to have a land line in case you loose the cell phone or break it. Also some companies that you want to subscribe to require a land line number. I dont know if that helps any but those are the reasons i used when my boyfriend wanted to get rid of the house phone.

We are so far out in the country all we can have is cell phones. Cell phones are nice, but don't really do the job as far as I'm concerned. The reception is better on a landline, no dropped calls. The network never goes down. 911 is different on cell phones. You can have several phones and when one rings they all ring. If I forget my cell phone upstairs and go downstairs, if it rings, I sprint for it and usually don't make it in time. A landline never just doesn't ring when someone's calling you. A problem we have with our cell phones. Lots of reasons to keep a landline. We'd sure have one if we could.

Land Line is very reliable, and always has great reception.
Cheap...I pay 10 bucks a month for a land line with no frills or long distance.
I keep my land line for safety. My home security system has the ability to call my cell phone if it ever goes off.
I also keep it for some of the other electronics I have in my home. My DirecTV satellite receivers make a daily call to get Guide and billing information. My Tivo also makes a daily call to download information.

My landline was "out of service" a few weeks ago when I switched from SBC to MCI. I solely used my cell for those 2 weeks.
ADVANTAGES
No bill, since work pays for my cell
I can always be contacted, since my cell is always with me
All the calling features (voice mail, call waiting, CID)
DISADVANTAGES
I can always be contacted, since my cell is always with me
My calls dropped despite the fact that I had 4 bars
When my battery died, I was SOL
If your apartment buzzer or DirecTV is connected to your phone, you are SOL
I'm not too comfortable doing my banking over a cell
If I leave this job, I leave the cell number
No DSL, only cable modem which is more expensive (well worth it to get away from SBC)

having a landline phone is slowly losing it's popularity. but i think you should have one just in case, for emergencies. like what if you have a bad signal and you need to call 911... your call could be cut off and you won't get the help that you need.
plus, stuff happens that causes cell phones to mess up. i dunno what part of the world you live in, but i live in New York City-- pretty good, developed city... but 2 blackouts in 3 years and a terrorist attack. cell phones are useless because everyone is trying to get in touch with somebody using a cell and it jams the signals. at least with my landline, i was able to call other people to tell them i'm ok and stuff.
that's something to consider.

One, the batteries will never go dead like a cell phone.
Two, it will work when the electricity is off, unless it's a cordless.
Three, many appliances like DirecTv and Dish network may require it to order movies, etc, as well as if you have a security system in your home.
Four, it is more convenient in an emergency, having to dial 911.
Last, it won't go dead when your on hold.

for the landline, you don't have to worry about the minutes you consumed. and international call rate is less than cell phone's. the reception allways good regardless of telephone provider.
and you can install DSL when you don't want to pay for cable

Also, the phones are lot more comfortable. There are never any pockets. You get dial tone even if the cell tower or electricity is down. And you can use it as primary or backup Internet access.

if i'm about the living house then it really is continually the landline and landline expenses are more cost-effective then cellular. the cellular is accessible for emergencies although or for once you aren't any more about the living house.
