It is a very common condition that is believed by many experts to be the number one cause of disability in the world. In the U.S.,17% of people will experience depression at some point in their lives. An estimated 19 million people in the U.S. are currently suffering from depression. Depression is more common in women then in men, with 25% of women suffering from depression severe enough to warrant treatment at least once during their lifetime.

Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"
Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
Restlessness, irritability
Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain
If you have been experiencing several of these symptoms to a degree that they have impaired or affected your life, talk to your doctor. He or she can help you find out whether or not you are suffering from depression and direct you to appropriate resources for treatment and recovery.

depression sucks... I was really depressed all last year and I know how bad it can get... if you are sleeping a lot, or not at all. Eating, like if you eat a lot or not a lot... Also if you're body is physically feeling tired but you haven't really excercised much. Not really caring much about really importiant things, or things that you love. Not wanting to be around friends or family. Those are some I don't know if there are others.

The symptoms of depression are varied, excessive sleeping, withdrawing from friends and/or family, not taking part in activities you normally would, thinking of suicide or cutting yourself, outbursts of anger, crying for no apparent reason, the list goes on.

1) Increase or decrease in appetite.
2) Not enjoying the things you used to.
3) Anti-social.
4) Inability to hold a constant thought.
5) Thoughts of dying
I'm sure there are many many more but these are the ones I can think of right off the top of my head.

Withdrawl or explosion of temper. It could be a swing of depression after a bout of mania / elation ("happiness"). - which is part of bi-polar disorder.

Insomnia is apart of depression, sleeping too much or too little, eating (same, hobbies, work, same too much or too little), loss of interest in work, studies, hobbies, things person used to enjoy...

signs are sad all the time for no reason, feeling like a failure, feeling like you are meaningless, and better of dead, any signs of non exsistance, or wanting to commit suicide. uncontrolable crying. feeling sheltered, not wanting to be around usual friends or family. wanting to hurt yourself or others.

restlessness, irritibility, moody, tired, not doing the things you used to do. Feeling sick all the time, and you cannot control your emotions.

not going out, keeping yourself to yourself all the time, not socialising, drinking/smoking too much. eating too much or too little. sleeping too much. there are lots of symptons.
