do i have too use maple syrup or can i use regular syrup???

You have a few options - for me the dark corn syrup always tasted best.
Molasses Substitute
For 1 cup, use
1 cup honey;
or
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar;
or
1 cup dark corn syrup;
or
1 cup pure maple syrup.

u can use dark cane syrup...like Karo's
