As simple as it sounds, "Water" is the best answer. If your body is telling you that it needs fluid, that fluid is water. It's the only thing that will actually decrease your thirst. Beer or soda or whatever only quenches your thirst because of its water content.

Go with a low-sodium distilled water that has minerals replaced. Drinking pure distilled water can be bad for you in large quantities, and you want something with low-sodium just because most people get enough sodium in their diet from other sources.

If you are thirsty specifically because you are exerting yourself/sweating/etc. then you might want to consider an electrolytic drink to replace the minerals that you have lost through sweat. In this case, do not go with a low-sodium drink because sodium is one of the main minerals that is lost through sweat. The best electrolytic drink, in my opinion (and that of many doctors), is Pedialyte. It works for adults as well as children. If that isn't "macho" enough, drinks like Gatorade work, but are generally too high in sugar.

I saw a news story about this. They rated drinks on a scale from 1-5. 5 being the best for quenching thirst.
Water received a 4 and sports drinks, like gatorade, received a 5. Some of the worst rated were coffee and soda; however, I don't remember what number they got.

If your thirst is RAGING, it means you are dehydrated and you need water. If you drink water more often your thirst will not be as likely to become raging.

Ice water!! I keep a 52 oz mug filled with it at all times--because if you FEEL thirst, your body is already dehydrated!
Humans are over 70% water--you need lots of it.

Water. Plain, ordinary tap water. After having drunk a reasonable amount, you can consider drinking a sports drink or cola to recharge your energy level.
