They are both great cameras for the price.
The 30D gives you a better build quality, a longer life (+100.000 pictures vs. +50.000), 5 frames per second vs. 3, better auto-focus (the 400D is no slouch), and a few extra features to take more control.
Oddly enough, the 400D has 10 mega-pixels, vs. 'just' 8 mega-pixels on the 30D, and the 400D has a built-in dust reduction system.
On the whole, my only gripe with the 400D is that it's so small. It just doesn't 'feel' like a great camera. But the results are excellent.
If you're just getting into photography, the 400D should do nicely. So unless you're into sports photography and *need* the 5 FPS of the D30, I'd get a 400D and spend the price difference on a better lens. I'd even consider getting a 350D and a *really* good lens, or two lenses instead of one.
The 18-55 that comes as a kit with the 350D/ 400D is very poor.
The 17-85 that comes with the 30D is great. Perhaps a bit weak at the wide end of the zoom, but still. For $510 sold seperately, it's the best walk around lens for under $1050 (the price of the Canon 17-55mm).

The 400D suffers from the same problem as the 350D, its just too small, it doesnt feel like a proper SLR to me, more like a large compact. I've always been a Canon man and my advice would be go for the 30D or if you can stretch that far the 5D (which i have) is a stunning camera, full frame 35mm sensor and nearly as good as the EOS 1ds MKII. Far more important though are the lenses, dont jump in and buy cheap lenses straight away, if possible wait and go for L series, if you dont you'll only end up changing later (i did and it cost me a lot in wasted lenses) again they cost a lot more but the difference in quality is huge.

personally I would see if i can find a 20D second hand as loads of people are upgrading to the 30D.

The 30 D is a fantastic camera But so is the 20D and believe there is not a lot of difference between them, the screen at the back is a little bigger but at the end of the day if you have to Reilly on the view screen then you should not be using Digital and start practising with film.

The 20D and the 30 D will take far more knocks than the 400D.

The bodies aren't so different that you need to wait. As someone else mentioned save for the glass (lens).
Either body will be outdated in 1.5 years or so but the lens will last for a LONG time.

And my feeling is that having a camera and taking photos with it is far better than wasting time saving up for slightly better camera.

I would say to buy the 400D, you will be very happy with it and if you feel the need for more, pick up the new model in a year or two when you'll probably have more money.

Best of luck!

mmm i have a 350d and my girlfriend has the 30d

not sure what the 400d is like, but the comparison between 30 and 350 is that a) weight, 350 is soooo easy to carry around, whereas 30d is a ******* brick

b)30d if you take the same photo, the lense is like amazing compared.. the picture colour is immense

my advice is (from my friend who is a proffesional photographer)... he told me to get a 350d learn it with the crap lense it comes with and then get a new lense when you have the money, so u can learn the camera, and then just update it.l..

good advice i think

As in all things you should decide what you must have and what you would like to have from your choice.
Then compare
Then filter
Then act.
Another will be along in 5 minutes anyway
