Sugar Ray Robinson was the best. Ali may have been the best heavyweight. Henry Armstrong may be Robinson's closest competitor. Oscar De La Hoya and Mike Tyson do not belong anywhere near this discussion.

Don't think there was a best overall but if you were to catogorize them say into skill, aggression, determination, etc etc I would list them as follow.
Skill = Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard
Aggression = Rocky Marciano or Sonny Liston
Determination = Frank Bruno. Never got anywhere despite the hype but never gave up trying.
