I have not been brought up with a religious background, however I do have faith in God. I just am not sure how to pray or to whom to pray. I do pray to God, but what about my Grandfather that passed? Can I pray to him? Do I pray to Jesus? I realize that it probably doesn't matter and I'm more curious than anything, but I also want to be sure that I'm not being disrespectful in some way.

Be ferverent and respectful when addressing him. Speak to him as you would your own father pouring out your problems, thanking him for all your blessings, and remember, he knows you inside and out better than anyone. He knows your heart and he knows when you're sincere, so don't sweat the small stuff. Just do it. He always knows what you meant to say or forgot to say in prayer.
P.S. God is your advocate and will pass all messages onto your Grandfather. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how much you must miss him.

You pray to God who is the trinity (he is father(God), the son (Jesus), and the holy spirit (who is inside you)) You do not pray to your grandfather who has passed away. You can ask God to let your grandfather know you love him and miss him. You can also talk to your grandfather's picture, I know he's watching over you so he will hear you. When you finish your prayer always say "in Jesus name i pray Amen" because if it weren't for Jesus dying on the cross we couldn't have a relationship with God. God bless you!

The Bible says that none of us knows how to pray as we ought (Romans 8:26) and that we know nothing as we ought (1 Corinthians 8:2). I'm starting there just to say I admit I don't know anything about praying to God the way I ought, but I'm happy to share some things I've come to learn about prayer.

The only way I know of to come disrespectfully to God is in pride. The Bible says God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5). If someone comes in with an attitude like God owes them something and they've come to collect like some thug, according to these scriptures all that person is going to get is resistance from God.

Here's how Jesus described who is justified and who is not after they pray:

Luke 18:10-14 - Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

You are a great example of how God is in each one of us. You were not raised with the understanding and teachings, yet there is still an acknowledgment and desire inside of you. The candle is still burning. You do pray through Jesus Christ to God the Father. Pray and he will direct your life. Get in a good bible based church. Get a good Holy Bible. Read the bible each day & pray. Get involved with a spiritual mentor, who can help you. God bless you & comfort you. Great to hear from you sister!

Pray to GOD by whatever belief system feels the most comfortable to you. personally, I pray as if GOD is right beside me and I'm talking with a FRIEND who knows my wants, needs, and desires before I ask. suggest not praying to your grandfather as he has no power to help you. however, to say a prayer to GOD for your deceased grandfather and those who have gone before is acceptable in some but not all religious belief systems. follow your heart and you can not be totally wrong.

It is written that Jesus is our intermediary. When one confesses Jesus Christ Lord of ones life & believing in ones heart the atonement & resurrection, person becomes saved (receives everlating life). This is the spiritual birth where one becomes a child of God.

When one is a child of God, one can pray to God 24/7, to God the Father & to Jesus & the Holy Spirit that is with us & shall be in us also is there forever with us. Jesus said that God would have us worship Him in Spirit & Truth anywhere.

To pray to God it has to be in Spirit & Truth (truthfully from your heart). God seeks an honest heart. To pray to any one else before God, would be a form of idolatry. And that would be disrespectful to God.

No you can't pray to your grandfather. There are too many demons out there that could pretend to be your grandfather. If your grandfather is in heaven with the Lord, then you can get a message to him through Jesus. Jesus can reveal to you what He knows is best. Was your grandfather redeemed by the blood of the Lamb?

It does matter. I have prayed to Jesus about loved ones that have passed. Jesus has confirmed to me they are in heaven with the Lord. One grandfather didn't go to heaven to be with the Lord because the Good News wasn't taught to him apropriately. Though he was a wonderful grandfather. The Lord showed me that he is in a place of rest.

TiaS,
You understand the concept of God, yet say you don't believe. Jesus said that those who deny Him before others, He will deny before His Father & Angels. I just want you to not write you don't believe in God. Without faith it is impossible to please God, for those that come to Him must believe that He Is, and is a rewarder to those who diligently seek Him.

I don't believe is 'god' persay, but I pray sometimes. I put my energy into the universe and ask myself and the energies around for guidance. I am sure if there is a God I am praying to him. Who cares what you call him/her.. doesn't it say somewhere, you seek and you will find.

I was raised Christian, and they believe that you pray to God (who consists of God the Father, The holy Spirit, and Jesus. Like an egg, one egg and yet 3 parts... you pray to God the Father, and Jesus interecedes on your behalf and the Holy Spirit aids you in life)

When you think of your grandfather can you feel him in your heart? Do you feel as if he is with you because of the love in your heart?

When I pray to God, or generally chat to God then I do it from the heart. I can be walking up the street and think of something I would like to say to God and I don't feel the need to shout it out when know he can hear my thoughts through my feelings that generally run through my veins, through my heart.
I pray out aloud too sometimes.
With me it's like I feel as if God is alive within me, like all my friends that has touched my heart too. Each and all I can feel close to yet some are so far away-

Love an' Peace xxx

You can pray to both your grandfather and Jesus. Just pray to let him know that your thankful for all of the things he's done for you like letting you live through the day and stuff like that.
