Impossible to eat 500 - downright ridiculous.
1500 to 2000 for females and 2400 for males. This is just for breathing, talking and for all the organs in your body to function properly.

It takes 500 calories/day for one week just to lose 1 pound or ... put another way,.... eat 500 calories extra a day for the next 7 days and you will gain 1 pound.

Perhaps, that's what your husband meant. May be you misunderstood?

Your husband is either extremely clueless and very misinformed, or he has some serious issues wanting you to eat 500 calories per day. I'm not sure why he thinks this, but it is very wrong. Your body needs at least 1000-1,200 calories per day just to function normally, ie sleeping, breathing, moving about. Then on top of that, all your daily activities, such as going out, working, exercise, etc, which may use up as much as another 800-1000 calories per day. You couldn't survive on 500 calories for very long, plus your body would go into starvation mode and start storing fat, but at the same time, your muscle would start to break down. You can tell your husband, he needs to get clued up before he has the nerve to start giving you nutritional and diet advice. Take care : )

500 calories a day......
it's a terrible way to LOSE weight.

If you're trying to GAIN weight, try doing that for a few weeks and then go back to regular eating, and watch yourself pile on all the weight you lost, and much more.

That's a starvation tactic, and ultimately, starvation tactics train your body to use every calorie more efficiently, and to hoard calories and fat as a defense against the next famine.

For years I followed my doctor's basic, but very wise and reliable advice: Eat healthy, move your body a lot, and have the OCCASIONAL treat. Don't go on diets. On that advice, I stayed within 10-15 pounds of my ideal size for many years.

Then feeling bad that I'd gained an extra 10 or so, and based on the comments of a loved one, I tried a diet. It wasn't a fad diet, or a gimmicky one, but it did restrict calories. People lauded my success in dropping over 30 pounds. It was the thinnest I'd ever been, and thinner than I imagined being able to be. (I wasn't underweight, I just hadn't been able to picture myself NOT overweight.)

When I resumed the eating that had successfully maintained my weight in a balanced way before I ever dieted (albeit a little high, my weight had normally been quite steady), ..... I regained 60 pounds! Over 10 years, I went through this cycle three times. (That's just three times I tried 3-6 months of healthy but restricted eating, folks.) Total ultimate weight gain? 140 extra pounds.

Yes, it's true. I didn't seriously STRUGGLE with my weight until after the first diet must have altered my metabolism.

(I've lost a good chunk of that weight now, but not by dieting or surgery or any weight loss product or gimmick. I eat what I want, for the most part. It was through reducing fast food consumption, having an underlying disorder diagnosed and treated, and with the help of aother nifty thing called a bicycle, that I gave up my car for.)

That is definitely wrong. Anorexia comes to mind on a diet plan like that. Only a doctor should advise you on how many calories a day you should limit yourself to because going to extremes can do all kind of harm and damage to your body that you may never recover from. I wonder how your husband would like it if he were on a 500 calorie a day diet!! I don't think so!!

Tell him to try to eat 500 calories!! I bet he can't!!

To lose weight, you need to eat between 1200 and 1500 calories per day. To maintain weight, you should eat somewhere around 2000 calories per day.

That isn't healthy. 2,000 calories are recommend each day along with exercise. If you think about it, even with one meal, the calories can add you quite quickly so even this many calories is not that much.

That is possible - but extremely unhealthy!!! A well-rounded exercise, diet regiment is needed to lose weight. If that is what you are trying to do.you can calculate your target daily caloric intake through a lot of online services, all of it depends on your present weight and what you want to weigh later. Good luck. And he should love you for who you are regardless.

No, you are not wrong! That would mean you'd be on the verge of anorexia! I'd tell your husband to shut the hell up and if he thinks its such a good plan should do it himself and see how he feels! Good Luck
