Most of the external USB HD's we sell come with backup software. If yours didn't, assuming you're using XP, use Windows backup. Do a full backup, including system state, etc. You don't need Veritas or anything fancy for a home disaster recovery solution.

Might want to add a Belkiin Power Suppy, in case power goes out or is a surge, the battery powerd backup will give you enough time to backup any fresh data you may have been working on to a CD,HDD or any external device, it will also allow you time to do a safe shutdown.
