people have pets and can't afford to get them to the vet when they are ill. I've ran across so many questions from numerous people needing answers from others about their pet's health conditions, some being quite serious. Yet there seems to be a popular theme, "I can't afford to take them to the vet". If a person or family is strapped for money to begin with, why enter a animal into the mix? They require special needs that differentiate from humans. They have to have all their appropriate shots, they need to be either spayed or neutered, and when they get sick or injured, they need immediate attention from the vet that could require hospitalization and medications etc. These items are extremly expensive! Before anyone gets a pet, they should contact their local animal hospital and find out how much each shot and procedure is. Then they should weigh the pros and cons of having a pet and then decide. This is just my opinion. What do you think?

This can also be applied to having children as well. If you can't afford to have any kids, why have them? I'm not saying you should kill your animals or abort your children. There are other alternatives. Like waiting until you are financially stable to have them or if you do have them, they give them up for adoption. It sure does beat neglect and ignorance in these matters.

Wow! I'm impressed by the positive feedback from everyone! It's going to be tough choosing which answer is the best. If I could, I'd choose them all!
Thank you very much for answering me with kindness and agreeing with my ways of thinking. I wasn't sure if I would get a positive reaction or a negative reaction or both. It's good to know that there are more people like me in the world who has a caring and loving heart for not just animals but for children as well.
May God Bless each one of you!

The one thing that i really get annoyed at is that people do NOT get them fixed. It is healthier for the animal and your not allowing them to bring more babies into the world who people will not have money to care for either. I also agree with you on this but, on the other hand i also worked for a vet for awhile and one thing we saw was people who brought their animal to the vet for things and then had children and never took good care of them or couldn't make their utility bill because of the animals. Some crazy people out there im a big animal lover but, also believe that your own bills and care and those of your family must of course come first!

yes i TOTALLY agree. I have a huge passion for animals and I treat mine like they were my own children, sometimes I even think their human. If I think something is wrong or if their sick I freak out and take them to the vet whether I can AFFORD it that week or not. The vet doesn't mind to work with me he just wants whats best for the animal and he knows he'll get his money come payday. What people don't realize in getting a pet is that they can't speak for themselves when something is wrong its up to the owner to speak for them and do the right thing. Some people are just cruel and stupid. If you had a child of your own you wouldn't say "Well he/she just fell down the stairs and broke their leg, but I can't afford to take them to the doc. so they'll just have to deal with it." People just think just because its an animal they don't have feelings but they do PEOPLE. Nobody as any business even owning a pet if they cant take care of it. Another thing if your not a breeder please get your pet spade or neutered. Okay I'm done I can go on about this for days good question.

question of the century!!! Some times I get such an attitude with these people. I use to work as a vet tech. and have seen pretty terrible things. Education is key but how do you get them to at least pick up good book on the breed or pet their going to get BEFORE they get it. I honestly think only licensed breeders should be the only people to have unaltered pets. You can still breed mutts. they are the best. I now work in people medicine and its no different. Some people have so many kids with no medical ins. and the state(I mean you and I) have to take care of them. Sometimes I wonder if they know what causes kids! But what ya gonna do but have an attitude.

I agree with you but I have some understanding how things can get out of control. I had 6 cats, all neutered, shots, etc. Than a neighbor abandoned 8 cats with "Mama" pregant. They just moved and left these cats to fend for themselves the best way they could. When they showed up at my house, I couldn't let them starve. I fed them and had them all neutered except for 2. All I could offer was food, shelter, and all the love I had. The only alternative was to take them to the shelter which was already putting cats to sleep about as fast as they would take them in. When they get sick, they get vet care. I found 1 vet that charges $1.00 plus medicine and supplies. He's not just a vet, he's an angel. The main thing I would like to address is the fact that most male cat owners think that if a female cat has kittens that it's not their problem. ALL cats should be neutered. Not just females but males too. Females should be spayed. But anyone who owns a male should be responsible also. And anyone who just drops kittens and cats on the side of the road in hopes of them finding a home should be locked up. All of my cats have found me because someone else just threw them out like a bag of trash. May God help them 'cause I have no use for people like that. Please encourage people to have their males neutered. One male can be responsible for more kittens than 1 female. They can keep on making kittens while the females are pregant. But when you think about it, cats and people may have more in common then most people think about. Males (or their owners) should be held accountable, regardless of species.

oh you hit it right on the head. but you forgot the cost of good food. and dog house and beding and flee and tick med's. training. chew things and like my dog she has special needs being a chow he has to have fat in her diet and bones as well as fish oil and flax seed oil. with out it she get a real bad skin infection. there are also leashes and collors. any one that has a pet of any kind should have books on that pet. then there is the grooming as well. what did i miss? my dog cost me a lot but i would not want her any other way health and happy. so you all what more cost is there. and i love what you said. a pet is a 10yr commitment. or there is pet sitter or boarding too when you go with out her. that something we try not to do. she misses us so much and there is the add cost of staying at a place that will let you have a pet with you. and why is it when these people say i think my pet is sick so i am going to ask a board of people insteat of take the pet to a vet. any way i love your question and your answer. i with you on this one

I TOTALLY Agree. I actually have 7 cats (4 were kittens of my cat - who was let out by mistake of my stupid super by the time she came home finally she very pregnant) I was worried about the money but since I wasn't able to find homes yet, I have "tightned the belt" so to speak. So I don't buy my self an outfit once a week or something that I cleary don't need. I am responsible for caring for them, they didn't ask to be here. (Plus they are so darn cute) I have spent over $1000 in vet bills for their shots and the spaying of Mom (She had the appointment one day before she was lost - but couldn't keep it for obvious reasons) I plan on spenind more to spay/nueter the kittens.... It takes sacrifice but I am the adult and need to take care of mine.

I agree with you 100%. I worked at an animal shelter and we get so many injured and ill animals because people cannot afford to care for them properly. If something happens they wait and wait hoping that it will "fix" itself. By the time they do something about it it is too late and the animal has to be put down. It is heart wrenching and horribly irresponsible.

I agree! Don't get a pet if you can't afford it! I always tell people to start a little savings account for unexpected pet expences. Put maybe $5 a month away incase of an emergency.

Oh my gosh, I know!
I volunteer at a cat shelter, and my grandmother lives in West Virginia. She called me up one day and said, "When you visit me, can you take some of the kittens my neighbors have?"
Well, of course I did. Five beautiful kittens....beautiful besides the fact that their eyes were swelled shut, their nails were overgrown into the pads on their feet, their noses and eyes ran, they had all these sicknesses, ringworm, tapeworm....
The people who owned them before didnt understand how to raise and help a pet! Thankfully, all of these kittens are now healthy and alive. But those people should pay.

LOL! I could have written this exact thing. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer besides the fact that many people are short sighted and oftentimes ignorant to the realities of pet ownership.
