I have a 7 month mini daschund, and we are thinking about adopting a mini daschund puppy that is DEAF. I had posted earlier that she was BLIND but I must have had temporary insanity. I wanted to repost with the correct handicap. I want to know if she can have a relativly normal life and life span, or are other handicap's or health problems prone to happening? Thank you.

the dog won't even know that she is missing something, and will be as happy as any other..There are so many great sites for training deaf dogs..just do a search for " deaf dog training' and you will find LOTS of help.

Training a deaf dog will be much easier than a blind dog. They usually have a normal life span, unless they have ongoing med issues with their ears (infections etc...) There should not be any additional health problems caused by being deaf.
Of course (obviously) you have to be a bit more careful, and keep the dog on leash every where because they cannot hear.
Dogs can learn sign language and be well behaved dogs, there is just a bit more training involved.
Dogs will handicaps often adapt so well, you can hardly tell their is a disability, and live a perfectly normal life.

I am sure the dog will have a normal life expectancy as long as you take care of it well. It might be harder to train her if she can't hear you, but I have seen people put electronic collars on the dogs and use the mildest setting (or there may be collars that vibrate and not shock) so that you can get the dog's attention when needed.

His quality of life is 100% up to you. Dalmatians are prone to deafness and they can live a great life, there is however obediency issues because they cannot hear you scolding them. Also, I think daschunds are prone to Cushing's disease, gum disease and disc problems that result in paralysis.

Yes. Believe it or not you can teach a dog sign language. You don't have to know sign language, but if you point down for the dog to sit, etc. If you are with any luck the dog will be able to feel vibrations, so if he/she is doing something wrong you can clap your hands and the dog will feel the vibration, or stomp your feet on the floor. Only problem with stamping your feet or clapping your hands is that your normal dog may start getting jittery.

Your dog can live a happy healthy normal life. People always say " Keep your eyes open so you can see the world" not hear the world!
