Is there anyone out there with an autistic child? I have a 9 year old boy with autism and learning difficulties. He doesn't speak and i'm trying hard to toilet train him.

I also have a 'normal' five year old who sometimes finds it hard to understand.

It would be nice to know there are other people out there in a similar situation.......

I have a 10 yr old autistic niece I am helping. She was in diapers just last year & now is "mostly" potty trained. She knows a few words but doesn't really communicate very often.

Just to jump in on the MMR comments.
Inspite of anecdotal stories, at least most of the children with autism, developed autism BEFORE 18 months, when the vaccinations take place. There was a study using home old videos taken at first birthday parties & they were able to identify 90% of the kids with autism. If at 12 months, they were already displaying autistic behaviors, the vaccinations couldn't have caused them.

Another study shows that 20% of the autistic kids develop normally the first year & regress by the 2nd birthday. So it is not impossible that those 20% "got" their autism from the vaccinations. But I think it is unlikely that all of that 20% would have the same cause.

As far as this "massive increase" in rates of autism:

I'm ADD, as was my mother (born 1932) and my grandmother (born 1902). Nether of them were diagnosed as children because the condition was not known until the 60's. So they would not be in any stats, as I would. There by creating the illusion that more kids are ADD today.

The same is the case with some forms of autsim. While some people believe autism rates have skyrocketted, others believe the rate of diagnosis is what has increased, not the actual incedence rate.

Given that Asperger's, the most common form of autism (62 - 86%), was not know to exist in America until 1990, it seems obvious that at least some of the increase is due to a better understanding & therefore a better diagnosis of Autism. People with Asperger's were always around, just labeled as "odd," "geeks," or "not quite right."

Then I have to wonder how many of the kids with the more severe forms were labeled brain damage, or just retarded. Remember, until recently, the common belief was that autsim was caused by unloving, neglectful mothers. If a doctor KNEW the mother was very loving & attentive, he would likely rule out a dianosis of autism, therefore resulting in the diagnosis rate being artificially low (back in the 80's & before).

Bless you sweetheart. I also have a son with ADHD, which is part of the autism spectrum. I managed to potty train him okay when he was three, but raising him has been a challenge. I also have a three year old son who sometimes is at the receiving end of his brother's behaviour. All I can say is stay strong. Just continue to love him and support him. Get help within your local community. Your local borough council should be able to put you in touch with support groups.

I also find that prayer works. This may annoy you to hear as you may blame God for your son's condition. If I offend you then I apologise. I can only tell you that from experience, I know God loves your son very much and He really does care. He gives the most amazing strength and peace in our circumstances. Just ask Him and you'll see. I wish you well and will be thinking of you.

I'm currently 14 years old, and when I was a young child I never talked. Doctors thought I had Asperger Syndrome (which is a type of autism) but I never got diagnosed as autistic because they found that my speech and shyness were my only problems, and I had no other symptoms of Asperger Syndrome. However, to resolve these problems, I had to go to a speech therapist once a week to improve my speech and confidence. I started when I was four years old, and I continued to see my speech therapist until I was 12, when I finally got discharged and found my confidence restored and surprised to find my vocabulary substantially higher than many others'. I think to sort out the speech problem you need to send him to a speech therapist, but you really need to ask a doctor too.

I hope you get some good advice from this from people in the know. I just want to throw in my two cents, which is that there is a great deal of justifiable suspicion about the MMR jab in this country. Since it's use, autism (which is a very wide spread spectrum of symptoms) has gone from being very rare - some 1 in 140,000 children, - to one in 1,400. This is a massive increase, so said a chap on Radio 2 news recently. Remember Tony Blair taking little Leo to France for his jabs, and not being prepared to discuss the issue? I've heard of many parents attesting that their children developed autistic tendencies within weeks of the jab. Of course, the government isn't interested in admitting this. How much would the compensation be? Colossal! So they let it continue.
Now that's cynicism.

I don't personally, but I know someone with 2 autistic boys and 2 "normal" ones, she had help from social services, so if you aren't coping maybe they can help, someone just went and helped her with her kids which was such a big help for her, I think hers were about 7 and 3 or something like that and the other are one older and one younger.

Don't rely on this kind of site to help you. There are many societies and groups that can be found through the internet that can help you. Is your child statemented? Is he at a special school or mainstream? Don't waste time here, get searching and find the help you need.

i want to question isomniacs research on the mmr and autism relation! in japan they withdrew the mmr and found that the numbers of peope being diagnosed with asd stil rose. asd can not be correctly identified untill the same sort of age as when the mmr is given. the amout of parents who have made decisions not to vacinate there children against measles mumps and rubella due to misinformed propoganda is going to cause outbrakes that will claim lives in years to come. there are so many theorys on what causes autism and a lot of these are generated by desperate parents who want somethin to "cure" there children. to cure an autistic child is to take that person away and replace them with someone else.
