I think your friend is correct ,I do not believe the nervous system of a shrimp has the capacity to experience the sensation of pain.

If shrimp didn't have a spinal cord, they would not be able to move their legs. And they can, so they do. They don't have the protective vertebrae that people and most other animals do, but they do have spinal cords and they do feel pain. In fact, every living creature in the world feels pain. Some creatures, like the shrimp or the crab, are exoskeletal, which means they wear their skeletons on the outside, but inside that protective outer armour, they have nerve endings and synpases just like other creatures.

All animals have a spine, nerve endings and other qualities that let it feel. They aren't an exception at all. They're still alive.

Shrimp, Crayfish, Lobster and other crustaceans are all said to feel no pain.

I beg to differ.

Poke a lobster and he will react.
Crayfish will pinch you if provoked.
Shrimp are too confused to feel anything because they are always bumping into each other.

However, once cooked, they are all delicious!!

Of course, but must people don't think about that when they are chowing down on em. I'm sure their pain is over quick no matter which way they go------boiled or snapped

Of course. They have nervous systems just like the rest of us. Why would shrimp not have it?

As I am not yet a crustacean I cannot say. Probably, no.
They nobly give their lives so that mammals of many species may eat.
