It seems that my question (link below) irked a few people out there.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkC0Ie4CXBfF7COPUBLGvAbsy6IX?qid=20061003130108AAxfjA3

There are several things I'd like to mention.
1. I am not judging those who are overweight. I have my own battle with 10 extra pounds, and many of the people that I love are of "varying" weights.
2. I am aware that some people are overwieght because of a genetic tendency, a thyroid imbalance or other medical reason.
3. The main point that I am making is that we athiests get called "sinners" on this board on a daily basis. I don't believe in the Chirstian concept of sin, but in human morality. I am merely pointing out the hypocrisy of some of the people who call us sinners, on a daily basis.
4. Kudos to those who fessed right up and said that gluttony is a problem that they are working on. I know that it is for me.

Comments?

Thanks for the compliment, DarkLotus, but I'm very happily married.

1.No, you are not judging those who are overweight, however you are calling the Christians hypocrites.

2. What should that matter? The damage was done with the first question you posted on this subject,

3. You can make a point without attacking. I've seen it done.

4. Those who fessed up were goaded into it.

As a fellow atheist, I find your behavior embarrassing. Especially after the answers you just gave to my questions.

I think you will find many overweight Christians because overeating was the only "acceptable" vice. The church I grew up going to didn't allow: smoking, drinking, dancing, going to movies, mixed swimming (guys & girls together), playing cards, and well, probably a few things I can't remember. Eating was ok. We had LOTS of potlucks, after-service desserts, etc...

I think the Christian community in general is just beginning to recognize the issue of overeating, (or gluttony,) and is beginning to address it, just as it has progressed somewhat in other areas. There has been a new wave of weight loss groups within religious groups and ministers are daring to address the topic. It can be an embarrassing topic for many.

I'm sorry that you do not believe in God, but I'm sure when you are ready, you will find Him, (or rather, He will find you!) God loves you even when you don't believe He exists.

Look, when someone who is of the christian faith calls atheists sinners they are referring to their beliefs. In the Christian faith atheists are sinners and they do have their right to say what they believe. It's ok that you believe what you want to believe but, you can't expect everyone else to just be ok with that.
Here's the deal; imagine believing in atheism so much that it literally hurts you to see other people not being an atheist. Most of us Christians have so much faith in our God that we get hurt just knowing that there are people who don't know God.
Sin essentially means "missing the mark; falling short; or a departure". The truth of the matter is that, sin is the act of falling short of morality therefore sin is not fake. Now lets say that in the Christian faith "morality" means "God." This is what we come up with: "falling short of God." Even if you take God out of it, sin remains real.

we are all sinners the bible make it plane that all have fallen short of Gods standard if any one sais that he does not sin he is deceiving himself that said i do not think that your saying that you never do anything wrong I am interested in the battle that you have with weight control this is analogus to the struggle with sin that we all have we need help to deal with sin as you will no doubt have struggled with trying to get some weight off and probably failed I have! so the answe to both is that we need external help with sin we need to agree with god and admit that we have displeased him secondly we need to except that he will accept us just as we are its all about relationship we all want to look better and be better but we need help the bible saiss taht god does not look on the external us but he looks at our hearts
if a christian sais to you your a sinner I hope he is not saying I am better than you perhaps they are just pointing out the hopeless condition that we are all in without gods help there should be no room for a christian to brag or condemm anyone as they are in the same position in fact the only person we should judge is ourselves much love hope you understand the spririt that this is communicated in

You don't believe in "sinning... but rather in human morality. Do you mean that being human gives rise to natural "bad behavior"?

In christianity we call that original sin, mans sin nature (also called sins of the flesh).
Whether christian or non christian we all have the ability to overcome the temptations that haunt us daily (overeating being an example) the christian has a source outside himself from which to draw strength. The non -christian must rely on him or herself... and of course thre latest pop cultural fad for self improvement).

patience is a virtue and gluttony is a sin, but even God can't protect you if you have to tell a christian their 50$ drive thru order is waiting on fries AND chicken nuggets. Christians commit every sin in the book, but don't care about their own sins because they believe themselves forgiven and absolved of everything--they care about everybody else's, because that allows them to be judgmental and unforgiving and to their martyred minds, that is more fun--depart in peace

Ok the 7 deadly sins:

Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Wrath, Greed, Sloth.

These can lead to damnation.

I too am working on that sin- as well as a whole host of others.
Gluttony is a sin.

See, the seven deadly sins aren't actually in the bible, they were made up to help explain how to live in like the sixth century.

Gluttony is not really about food, it is about overindulgence in ALL things. We should strive for moderation in our lives, as we all know too much of a good thing is...well not good.
