my friend just called... the other day she found a kitten outdoors... probably less that 6 weeks old... she's been caring for it... today she came home and the kitty was laying on the floor, not moving, and she tried to stand him up, but he couldn't even stand... he wouldn't even open his mouth to be fed... but he purrs when she pets him... any idea what could be wrong with him?

Honestly, I volunteer at a shelter and we have many cases like this.
Feed and give the kitten water. Assist it to the litter box and let it rest. If the condition doesnt improve, take it to the vet and get it put to sleep. It sounds cruel, but it will put the kitten out of its pain. If it cannot even stand, it is in an immense amount of pain.
Also, tell your friend to be careful. Sickly outdoor cats could have sicknesses such as ringworms (contagious to humans) and FIP, a deadly disease.
Good luck!

Honestly I am not trying to be mean but you shouldnt have a pet if you cant afford to take care of it. This poor animal is suffering beacuse of it. Can she maybe borrow money from a friend or a parent. This cat does need medical help immediatly. The kitty could also have and internal infection which would mean she needs antibiotics that a vet would prescribe. He is very dehydred by the sound of it. You can try giving it small douses of Pedialite that you buy at a drug store but this will not fix the problem it will only make sure that the kitty is not going to die from dehydration. Please take it to a vet even if she cant afford it just take it anyway and tell the vet they will usually help.

The kitten may be dehydrated, which in some cases depending upon how bad the condition is sometimes they will drink but even though they do its not enough, it would need extended treatment(a trip to the vet). Which in your case wouldn't help because she doesnt have the money.I don't know if your vet does this but here if you find a pet and they need treatment if you take it in they will treat it and find it a home at no cost to you, on the negative side she wouldn't be able to keep it.

Oh boy- you have an emergency here.
Tons of things could be wrong with this kitten- it could be too cold, it could be injured, it could have the distemper virus, it could have flea anemia....
Purring is not a sign that things are OK- dieing cats pur too.
Get the kitten to a vet NOW!

the kitten is suffering, and It needs to go to the vet! be kind and loan your friend the money to take the kitten to the vet, because without proper examination and shots to prevent any more diseases or illnesses, it will die. the kitte may have a virus or in a worse case, a disease... the kitten is sick so he will not really eat, and your friend cannot force him to so don't let the poor thing die of starvation- go to a vet ASAP!

He could have distemper and will probably die from that if not given some support from a veterinarian.
Cats purr when happy and they also purr when they are in pain. If the kitten has diarrhea that is a sure sign of distemper (called panleukopenia in cats).

I had a cat who was 6 weeks and she ate regular kitty food. Thats what you should buy for it. But I think you need to take it to the vet too, money should never be an issue for a sick little kitty

Take the kitten to a shelter, tell your friend to advise them she is handing responsibility/the kitten to them, they are under legal obligation for its welfare.
Unfortunately there is no scientific evidence to suggest purring patterns, as such they purr when in pain just as much as when they are happy...
They welfare of the kitten comes first.

He needs veterinary care! I'm sorry to sound harsh, and I realize your friend is trying to help, but if you can't afford to care for pets, you shouldn't have them. The symptoms you describe constitute a major medical emergency. I've held many a dying cat and I can tell you they often purr while doing it.
