They are generally called a "Wheat Penny" and you just missed a good sum of money by a year and some copper. Due to WWII, pennies minted in 1943 were not made of copper. A few were made however and are very rare. Where the penny was minted - the mint mark - and the condition of the penny also affect the value.

actually a 1942 penny may be worth a little more since during ww2 they began making pennies out of steal for a couple of years.. not sure which years exactly but you should check it out before you drop into a gumball machine..

I did get my calculator out and after about l or l 1/2 second.. I determined that it's worth was about 1 cent

Those are called wheat penny's. It would depend on what condition that it is in. You could call a coin store. Or maybe try typing , old coins ,on your Internet and search.
