I saw on PBS that there are things that are actually called SALT FARMS, where salt is farmed, harvested, processed, and sold.

Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, table salt (and other salts) are evaporated from the bay in shallow ponds, then cleaned, processed, and packaged. I understand it is mined in other parts of the nation. Be sure to get salt with iodine if you don't eat seafood or live near the ocean! Without iodine, you can get goiter.
