It depends on what kind of birds and where or how your sign is posted. One thing you can try is put up a bird feeder/nest box somewhere else, then around your business sign string up CD's. Most birds don't like the reflection of shiny things so that deteres them. However there are birds that are attracted to shiny things, so it is a fifty fifty chance it will work. Hanging CD's is a trick gardeners use for their garden to keep crows away from the corn. It works really well. However, like I said it depends on the type of birds. So maybe give that a try and hopefully it will keep birds out of your sign. There is always the possibility it won't work too because the birds always nest there and once they have a place established to nest, it takes a lot to get them to leave it behind and find a new place to nest. But it sounds like anything is worth trying. so try the CD's and good luck hope it works.

We had a problem of every year some birds would try to build a nest by our front door, and dive bomb anyone that tried to use the door (Great way to get rid of door to door sails :D )

But we solved the problem with a large stuffed bird hung up where they try to build there nest. This didn't hurt them, and drove them away.

Using a netting seems to be the best humane way of keeping birds from roosting. I've also heard of ultrasonic devices that are suppose to repel birds because of the irritating frequency -- though not a good idea if you have pet birds in the vicinity.

Go to a sporting good store and buy an owl decoy. Plate it on top or the sign or near it and the birds will go away.

I would get some type of netting that keeps them out of it. I've seen netting on signs for this very purpose and it seems to be very effective.
