How old is your son? Is it the first time he's going to be away from home?
I appreciate that you've worked hard and of course you've got a right to be annoyed, but you need to work out whether he's doing it because he's: a) an ungrateful little imp, who likes messing you about and doing what he likes [Be very annoyed]; b) he recently watched Passenger 57 and has developed a serious fear of flying [Be annoyed with whoever gave him that particular DVD]; c) he's young and suddenly realised that he's going to be very far away from his home and his loved ones and he's scared [Be annoyed that he didn't realise this sooner, but you can at least understand what might be going through his head]. As I said, I don't know how old your son is or what his character is like. I will just say that if the answer is (a), you should make it extremely clear that he can forget pocket money, Christmas presents, and Birthday presents until he turns 50!

Perhaps you should look at why he doesn't want to go and try and find a solution. I would also be very upset. Couldn't someone else take his place at a discount so you didn't lose all your money ??? I think he should pay you the money back not necessarily in cash but in jobs etc. He should learn the value of what you have done for him.

no, He should of really thought about going there and he should of not decide to change his mind to do that. he probably uncomfortable with his surrounding but soon he will get use to it.
Its like moving to a new school. he should suck it up and take it like a man. You worked hard to send him to where he wanted to go nad if he doesn't want to be there, well tough luck for him. Unless he is ready to pay back all that money then he will stay there, if he was my son.

You are not overreacting, but who's idea was it to send him to Canada. If it was his idea then you should make him get a job to pay you back. If it was not his idea then you just learned an expensive lesson.
Can the fair be transferred to another person, maybe you can get your money back that way.
Good luck.

No, you're not overreacting.
He has a simple choice - he either goes, or he gets a part-time job and pays you every penny of that money back.
A valuable life lesson, that.
