I stopped eating a lot of foods. In the beginning it started out as a simple diet to loose a few pounds for my dance program. Then I realized that I liked the way I felt and decided that a few more pounds would not hurt. And it went downhill from there. Loosing 5 pounds never satisfied me and I was never happy and willing to stop and maintain the weight I was at. It got down to the point where I might consume 500 calories a day, if even that many, and my body began to eat itself. When I looked in the mirror all I saw was fat but in reality was only skin and bones. It is a monster that is willing to destroy you but you become loyal to it. I could not imagine life without Ana and it took me years to realize that there really was a bigger issue. We all have our own reasons that have led to our susceptibility to this disorder but we are all the same because we believe in and follow what Ana is telling us instead of dealing with reality. Ana filled the empty spots but nearly took my life. I have been in recovery for about 6 months and I know that I am not completely safe yet. I could relapse at any moment and I have learned to live each day to its fullest and to live day by day. Please do not follow in my footsteps.

The bigger question is, "How do they stop?" Remember that eating disorders can be deadly in almost one case out of every 10.

The answer, though, is quite simple. Anorexics literally starve themselves. Your body needs energy (calories) to live. Breathing takes energy, growing, talking, maintaining a heart beat, walking, thinking -- all these take energy. If you take in (eat) more energy than you use then you gain weight because that extra energy is stored. If you spend more energy than you take in then you use up that stored energy and lose weight. If you do not get enough calories each day, not only do you lose weight, but your normal body processes (growing, fighting off disease, monthly cycles) stop as well. Anorexia is a deadly disease. It is not a weight-loss plan.

when you don't eat enough the body begins to digest itself.. and it stores your biggest reserves of energy (fat) so they are actually digesting organs and muscle. well i shouldn't say digesting.. they are actually cannibalizing them.
