I am having troubl with my dog watching me while we heel. For the last month I use treats and she only looks up here and there. Is it just that it takes awhile before they start looking up at you? Cause I have been doing this for quite sometime and I really see no improvement from when we started. If it isn't I would like some advice in what to do

1. Stop using treats -- it's not a good way to train a dog.

2. When you're walking, make sudden changes in direction, preferably towards the dog. When you bump into her (don't hurt her of course, just startle her), pretend she isn't there and keep going. Other times, make sudden direction changes away from the dog (don't let the leash choke her).

After a few rounds of this, she'll start to pay attention.

Does your dog catch treats? I would start by training her to catch treats from your hand, then start moving your hand to your face. Then you can use little pieces of human food and keep it in your mouth. Get her to look at your face and randomly spit the food at her. She'll catch it and soon learn to look at your face if she wants a treat.

Looking up is hard for some dogs though, especially depending on their structure. My lab will do it, catch my eye, and then stop looking at me, but she will always leave on heel correctly.

Steve has it right. Lots of turns and walk fast. Keep it exciting, weave in between poles or trees, don't always walk in a straight line. If she doesn't know what you are going to do next, she will be more likely to watch you. Wait until she isn't watching and do an about turn, if she isn't there she gets a mild pop.

Your dog doesn't need to be looking up at you to be aware of what you're doing. She couldn't walk normally if she looked at you all the time. Does she pay attention? Stop when you stop? Walk the speed you're walking? If so, that's what you want her to do.

If you want her to look at you, clicker training works wonders. I trained my greyhounds that way 6 years ago and they still know what "watch me" means. You need to say "watch me" and the split second she does, click and treat. Timing is crucial with clicker training. Dogs who are clicker trained remember behaviours years later because they were aware of them as they learned them.

If you are actually walking she is only going to look at you here and there as she needs to look where she is going. If she looks at you when you ask her to you're doing great!!

Try giving the hand signals only and not the verbal commands and see if she will pay more attention .
