Today, in collegiate areas of Boston/Cambridge, USA (which includes practically half the cities!) I noticed in different university areas two young females, seemingly students, who were wearing hijabs but also tight jeans. One walked with a noticable (natural) bumping. Both were wearing regular blouses, which were not suggestive but also did not hide their curves. I saw a girl similarly dressed over the weekend. this makes me curious: Is wearing the hijab becoming fashion-chic with young American (and maybe elsewhere?) non-Muslim women these days? Or are some young, college age Muslim girls somehow rationalizing their wearing the hijab without their other clothing being loose and hiding hiding their female form?

I think it's the latter--they're trying to balance looking cute and being good Muslim girls/women. Many American Muslim women that I've seen dress like that. Some others try to wear regular clothing, but go for bigger, longer, more modest styles.

Think of how many crosses you've seen winking out from a woman's prominently displayed cleavage. It's not that different.

I've never heard of "hijab" as a fashion statement, though non-Muslim women sometimes wear scarves on their heads for a variety of reasons. I do it when the chlorine in a swimming pool messes up my highlights, my wife does it in winter because she shaves her head and that gets cold, I saw a woman at Target this weekend wear it over rollers in her hair.

I think that it is the second idea, that it is a rationalization on the part of these girls. In our society however it is hard not to fit in, and being in hijab makes you stand out even more. Or it may be that they have simply gained weight and their jeans fit a little tighter than they used to. They may have shrunk in the wash and being students they may not be able to afford to buy new ones every time this happens. Sometimes it is also hard to find clothing that fits the description of hijab. In the summer time for example try finding a long sleeved high necked blouse. and the ones we wear all winter are too hot sometimes to wear in the heat. So it is difficult sometimes to wear hijab properly.

nothing can hide the female form unless it the really massive burka.....i have seen some real form fitting burkas....nothing left for the imagination. it is also interesting younger muslims dress american and only wear hijab as an identity thing, but older muslim women who no longer have the curves adorn themselves in weighty garments....makes one wonder

As far as I know, the only requirement for Muslim women is that they have their heads covered (which is true in other religions as well) and that they are dressed modestly (ditto for this one). As these are apparently Western women, their definition of modesty will of course be different than women in the Middle East.

there is nothing wrong of being a Muslim and having a good fashion sense, in my city Dubai, united Arab Emirates we wear what ever we like even same times mine skirts and cover it up with abayah "the black dress like" when we go out, its not reveling because no one can see it, also when i travel i wear what ever i want as long as its not to revealing and i dint wear abaya i just wear shelah "hijab".. as long as its not reaviling its ok, they are young and they are having fun dressing they way young girls like

I think it is becoming a symbol of rebellion to the natural order and a slam to the rulers, saying what you are doing is wrong.
A Jane Fonda type of I am against the war. Symbol.
It says I don't like Bush and the Republicans and I really hate the war.

Leave these women alone, whoever they are.
They are probably just trying to free themselves from their intolerable existence as a Muslim woman. It may take awhile, but understand how long females have been oppressed in that religion.

perhaps they were making the statement that the burka is not necessary in today's society, since we have evolved from the blatantly sexist days of mohammed when women were considered nothing but property.

There are many things about Islam that I do not agree with.

Women dressing modestly is not one of them.

However they should not be forced to do so.

Peace!
