Definately do the tape recorder..or video of them talking and telling life stories...also..check your yellow pages for video companies that can make slide shows or video presentations with the pictures, they would even be able to use the narration you recorded. Also, dont forget there will probably be young guests at this party and they will also need some sort of entertainment. But as someone else wrote..it is all about the family...so family games, story telling, lots of hugs and good family recipes are better than balloons, pinatas and catering.

have fun

You've got a great start and some good suggestions already. Do photo montages according to the decade taken in maybe? Also, something the entire family could enjoy (especially if for some reason a family member can't make it) is to take a tape recorder and as you have the special birthday person look at the pictures...record their comments, have them tell a story about the picture or the memories a picture invokes. You could then take this recording and transcribe it to print on a computer and scan in the appropriate picture. By doing this, you have taken personal history and made it into something all the family can enjoy. You can either print it out (a special after bday gift for the person) or send it as an e-book to other relatives. What better gift to give than a chance for this special person to be able to pass on family treasures through their words?

When my great grandmother turned 90 we made sure her whole family was there. Its not so much about entertainment, but rather family. Maybe you can have one of the grand children sing for her or even read a poem made especially for them. Also you can have a slide show of all the happy moments in their life playing during the party. Make it a special day for that person by showing them how much they are loved.....
