I cannot now remember the figures but I read the answer to this a while ago it goes something like " the shortest piece of string would be 1/2" as you couldn't make a knot with less , the longest piece is the standard roll made by the manufacturers which I think was about 1/4 of a mile then a few more figures were thrown in that made sense at the time and the answer came out at about 6 1/4 "

a piece of string is measured as the number of folds in in the rope multiplied by the length of each fold, followed by adding the number of turns by 2 * pi * the thickness of the rope plus the circumference of your neck. you have just measured the lengh of rope that you need to hang yourself for asking this question.
