My second language was english, actually, after german.

Then I learned french, but due to the lack of usage I forgot most of it by now. I haven't used it since 1980.

In 1980 I started italian for a while, but it didn't work for me, so I gave it up after 6 months.
5 articles, and I didn't have the time really.

1981 I started to learn dutch, which I still speak today, and swedish came in 1987, which I also still read and speak.

Well, I already have English, French, Spanish and Catalan - if someone doesn't have Canada's 2 official languages I would strongly recommend starting there.
If I had to choose another language, I would be torn between Chinese, or one of our First Nations languages (like Western Cree).

Hindi or Arabic. I just love the way they sound & look when written. They are very beautiful to me. I think you really have to LIKE something about the foreign language you study; the sound of it first of all, I would think. This liking of it keeps you staying with it, & thus, you learn it. You remember in school when they forced kids to study a language they didn't want to & weren't interested in? They didn't learn it & can't speak it today. They had no interest in it, nor love for it. It was a waste of time.
Pick one whose sound you love & are intrigued by.
