The rematch in Lewiston Maine. The reason the fight was held in Maine is because Cassius Clay had close ties with the Muslims and was going to change his name to Muhammad Ali right after the second fight with Liston. Liston of course was run by the mob, so there was potential for a lot of outside the ring extra-curicular activity.
Now, as for the fight itself. Clay hit Liston on the left temple with a short right hook that put Liston on the canvas. There is no doubt about the punch, watch it in slow motion to verify this. There is a question as to whether or not the punch was enough for Liston to wallow on the ground for a minute like a beached whale.
The thing is, Clay would not go to a neutral corner, and Liston basically refused to get up with what he believed was a "crazy man" standing over him, and the ref, former champ Jersey Joe Walcott clear across the ring. When Walcott finally came back over, Liston got up and the fight resumed. Walcott then left again and was told the fight was over. He then went over and broke the fighters apart and declared Clay the winner.
Obviously since Liston resumed fighting, the blow was not as devastating as he let on. At worst, the round should have gone to Clay via the knockdown, and the fight should have continued.

It was the second fight. The first Liston quit in his corner. There is a lot of speculation as to why Liston quit, and why he fell in the second fight. A good biography of Liston, "The Devil and Sonny Liston," by Nick Tosches explains this. With Liston's background with the mob, its very conceivable that he took a dive in both fights. Was Sonny scared of Ali? Heck no, this is a man who had knockout power in his jab! It's also very likely that the black power did not like the idea of an illiterate ex-con representing the black people so they bought Liston and the Title for Clay. I'm not saying this is true, but it is a very interesting theory.

it was in the rematch in lewiston, maine referee was former heavyweight champion jersey joe walcott, liston was on the canvas for prob close to a minute as Ali refused to go to a neutral corner and kept hollering at liston to get up by the time ali got to a neutral corner the time keeper notified walcott that the fight was over, many death threats were made towards ali for his decision to accept muslim faith and a "theory" was liston who possessed an iron jaw feared for his safety and took a dive. ali then known as cassius clay won the title in the first fight between the two in miami when liston refused to answer the bell for rd 7 claiming a shoulder injury.i think liston took a dive thats why ali stood over him and yelled get up you yellow coward, liston was in with big punchers and ali was great slick fast but not a knock out artist and he was`nt set he was bask pedalling circling and dancing, death threats were pretty serious causing them to move the location to lewiston, liston swung for the fences came up with nothing but air and said check please.i don`t buy any theory that they did`nt want a exconvict thug representing the title and fixed the fight especially in the rematch because clay was actually considered the bad guy in the rematch and the public would have preferred liston.skillnot good points yes your right they did resume fighting and i agree even though liston was down for over a minute ali never went to a neutral corner so i don`t think the count should have started but i guess it does, oh and clay changed his name the day after the first fight.

It was the second fight with Sonny Liston, in Lewiston, Maine.
There was, however, no phantom punch.
Contrary to popular myth, you don't have to hit someone hard to KO them - you have to hit them right.
Ali caught Liston moving in and hit him square on the jaw with an overhand right.
In 1967, he hit and knocked out Zora Folley the exact same way.

Postnote: Brad brings up a good point got that Folley fight on dvd he did indeed hit Folley with the same type of punch. "Sometimes the punch you don't see hurts you worse than a sledgehammer".
