it describes into how many individual 'dots' the camera's optical chip divides your picture.
the math seems easy... the more dots, the higher the resolution, the sharper the picture.
but wait. this only true up to a certain point. for example, there is no use to have a picturefile with more resolution than the printer that prints it on paper, the surplus information just gets lost. no hurt done you say? my memory chip is big enough? true, but the problem is this:
while CCDs (the optical chip that 'records' the picture) have ever more pixels, cameras tend to become smaller and smaller. that means that productionline CCDs cannot become bigger, because they have to fit into small casings. that means that each individual receptor on the CCD has to become smaller, and that means it collects less light, and thus less anolog information which DOES hurt the quality of the resulting picture.
of course there are cameras with bigger CCD chips, but not in the consumer sector.
my personal advice is: 4 megapixel is absolutely enough for everyday usage and does not suffer too much from receptor size reduction.
you will find those hard to buy though, because they are not produced anymore... why? because people just see the bigger number and dont ask what it means, or how it is accomplished.
i am glad you did, and hope i could help you.

Megapixels tell you how high the resolution the camera can take pictures at. Higher resolution means that you can make bigger prints or blow up a selected part of the image without loosing too much quality. If you are going to print 4x6 snapshots, anything over 3 megapixels is overkill. In fact, 3 megapixels can do great prints at 12" x 18".
Bottom Line: 4 megapixels should be plenty for most photographers.

Mega pixels tells you how clear the picture will be. If it has more pixels, it has better resolution, so generally your picture will be better quality and clearer. 6 mega pixels is better.

The more mega pixel the better the pic when you blow it up. just like the dots on a tv the more dots the better the pic.
